If you listen to a lot popular country music these days you'll find that most of it is really just pop music with a twang. That's not to say it isn't good. In fact, there are some great artists out there writing great tunes, and musicians that can play with astonishing skill and style. It's just that the industry itself has changed. It started with the 'countrypolitan' path artists took during the late 1960's and 70's, when their hits began to crossover to top the pop chart as well as the country ones. Somewhere along the line that true, pure and traditional sound just wasn't as prevalent as it had been. That's why Marty Stuart's appearance at The Sheldon Concert Hall was an event to remember. Marty and his aptly named band mates, The (His) Fabulous Superlatives, reach back to the roots of country music, producing an achingly beautiful sound in the process. Their appearance as the first act on this seasons' folk music series at the hall (October 3, 2014) marked the opportunity to hear this genuinely joyful noise in person.

What's resulted from those past few years is her debut album, All I Think When I Wake Up, out internationally today, September 23rd.

Country music, or incredible parodies of the legendary genre, twanged and twittered into the Stackner Cabaret when the Milwaukee Rep opened The Doyle & Debbie Show this September. A rollicking honky tonk evening, this pastiche tribute to county music also lampoons the battle between the sexes, an effortless task when placed into the gifted hands Michael Accardo (Doyle) and Erin Parker (Debbie) accompanied by the indefatigable Bo Johnson (Buddy) on the guitar.

When you've been given the privilege to watch and, of course, listen to legendary Tony winner Jennifer Holliday sing live---in that signature inimitable style---it's practically akin to a religious experience. She is, to put it mildly, still one of the world's most treasured, gifted musical voices. Even more awesome? Holliday served as the finale headliner that capped off an impressive line-up of Broadway stars that included Erich Bergen, Rogelio Douglas, Jr., Danny Gurwin, and Tony nominee Chad Kimball. And the highly entertaining evening---a pleasant mixture of amusing anecdotes and enthralling showtune performances---was hosted by Holliday's Tony nominated DREAMGIRLS co-star, Obba Babatunde.

There is something for everyone. Kids from 1 to 92 can 'boo', 'hiss', and toss popcorn at the villains. Adolescents can moon, if kids still moon these days, over the love story. And if you're too old and crotchety to care about love stories like me, then you can witness the other characters getting drunk, flirting, yelling and all in all having a good time. In the end ... should I say it? I'm gonna say it. In the end, BAD MEDICINE is good to the last drop.

The Nora Theatre's HER ACHING HEART and Commonwealth Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT are the theatrical equivalents of light summer reading, and both deliver spirited romance for a mid-summer night.

This summer the Texas Repertory Theatre Company serves up a slice of apple pie and southern charm with PUMP BOYS AND THE DINETTES. Prior to the show, I wasn't really sure what to expect. It certainly sounded like something that had country charm splattered all over it. Turns out, I wasn't too far off. Being born and bred in Texas along with an affinity for diners this was a great treat.

Despite some flaws, EOT's HAIR is a high-energy musical that's not to be missed, especially if you want to re-live those glory days of Be-Ins, peace signs and flower power.
