Figures of Speech - 2017 - West End History , Info & More

Almeida Theatre
Almeida St, The Angel, London N1 1TA, United Kingdom London

At a time of political turmoil, unprecedented world events and an increasingly divided society, what does inspiring leadership sound like?

Figures of Speech, a major new digital film project for 2017, will interrogate the vitality of speech to remember.

The Almeida brings together the most exciting artists to take risks; to provoke, inspire and surprise our audiences; to interrogate the present, dig up the past and imagine the future.

And so, we are on a quest to rediscover leadership, to put history’s greatest speeches back on the map, to come together and experience the moments when men and women stood in front of people to find that words are electric, hope is immortal and ideas can carve a path through history and into the future.

A concert of voices who demand to be heard, either again or for the first time, will take centre stage, as Figures of Speech uses the power of performance to explore big political and social ideas. This website creates a platform for a wider interrogation of what leadership and the power of the spoken word mean in 2017.

New DGA Study Shows Inclusivity of First-Time TV Directors Is At All-Time High
by Kaitlin Milligan - Aug 30, 2018

In a business where success often hinges on getting that initial break to prove yourself, probably nothing has more power to make the pool of working directors more inclusive than ensuring that race or gender doesn't keep any qualified applicant from getting a fair shot at that crucially important first job. That's why first-time hires have been such a critical area of focus for the Directors Guild of America for so many years. As part of this effort, the Guild has been tracking and reporting publicly on trends in first-time television director hires for nearly a decade. The latest numbers—in a new DGA report out today—are certainly encouraging, but there's still room for improvement.

BWW Review: Jonathan Leaf Explores The Roots Of Second Wave Feminism With Singular Artistry and Rigor in THE FIGHT
by Victoria Ordin - Nov 10, 2017

The very title of THE FIGHT encourages us to imagine the rivalry between Phyllis Feinberg (Fleur Alys Dobbins) and Doris Marguiles (Judith Hawking)--obviously fictional names for Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan---in pugilistic terms.Deftly directed by Peter Dobbins, artistic director for the Storm Theater Company (which is currently in its twentieth season), Leaf's meticulously researched play explores the ideological and personal conflicts within Second Wave feminism, taking the 1973 meeting of the National Woman's Caucus in Houston as its dramatic focal point. Like his last work, Deconstruction, THE FIGHT is part-mystery and part-intellectual history. Profiled as an 'up and coming playwright' and compared to Saul Bellow in Timeout New York, Leaf's signature is the sustained, careful exposition of concepts and characters through sharp, witty, realistic dialogue. One thinks of George Eliot's line in Daniel Deronda's Book II: 'The moment of finding a fellow-creature is often as full of mingled doubt and exultation as the moment of finding an idea.' Leaf's plays are cerebral yet full of emotion, 'mingl ing ' ideas with with their messy human manifestations in ways Eliot, an irreducibly philosophical novelist, would approve.
