It's only appropriate that Tommy, who's committed to diversity and an int'l perspective in theater, is helming an Africa-set play that's Broadway's first ever whose writer, director and cast are all black women.

Lupita Nyong'o stopped by last night's LATE NIGHT to talk about making her Broadway debut in the new play ECLIPSED. The actress discussed being an understudy for the role while a student at Yale Drama School.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray visited the all-female, multi-ethnic, history-making cast of Eclipsed backstage after Friday's performance at the John Golden Theatre on Broadway. They asked the actors how they decompress after performing. Lupita Nyong 'o described how they take time to commune together before every performance and then again, after the show. To coincide with International Women's Day, Broadway curriculum publisher StageNotes has unveiled an official digital toolkit inspired by the powerful new play, ECLIPSED, written by Zimbabwean-American playwright and actress Danai Gurira, which is now playing on Broadway at the Golden Theatre.

The new American play ECLIPSED by Danai Gurira just began Broadway previews last night, starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh. ECLIPSED, directed by Liesl Tommy, will open on March 6, 2016 on Broadway at the Golden Theatre (252 W. 45th Street). ECLIPSED marks a historic moment on Broadway: the first time the cast, director, and playwright are composed entirely of female artists, fitting for a production that so stunningly chronicles the experiences of a group of very resilient women. ECLIPSED, directed by Liesl Tommy, begins previews tonight, February 23, 2016, with opening night set for March 6, 2016 on Broadway at the Golden Theatre (252 W. 45th Street).

Producers Stephen C. Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey recently that the critically acclaimed Broadway bound Eclipsed will today launch a campaign to bring 10,000 girls to see the show. Through the '10,000 Girls Campaign,' girls from the Tri-State area between ages 16 to 24, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a Broadway show, will be given tickets to see Eclipsed. Though fans might know her as katana wielding Michonne on THE WALKING DEAD, actress Danai Gurira is about to make her Brodway debut as the playwright this march with ECLIPSED, starring oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong'o. All while that's going on, she also has an off broadway play, FAMILIAR, premiering soon, while simultaneously working on a pilot for HBO. It might seem like she's got too many things on her plate, but all of her projects stem from her passions. 

Eclipsed makes history during Black History Month.  Holding the special distinction of being led by the only two African-American lead producers on Broadway, Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey, Eclipsed will be the first show in Broadway history with an entirely female cast and creative team, and further: an entirely Black cast and creative team.  Eclipsed begins previews later this month.

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o is best known for her breakout role as Patsey in '12 Years a Slave,' and now she's heading to Broadway for the first time ever, with a starring role in ECLIPSED.
