Gerard Mortier and the New York City Opera have commissioned Charles Wuorinen, an American composer, to turn Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain into a work for the operatic stage. Proulx wrote the libretto, and Wuorinen completed the opera in 2012. The premiere was postponed after New York City Opera's General Director, Gerard Mortier, resigned. The project was then again taken up by Mortier at the Teatro Real in Madrid and is set to premiere today, January 28, 2014.

MCC THEATER as announced the preliminary lineup of performers for the annual Miscast 2014 gala, which will feature one-night-only performances from stars of stage and screen including Zosia Mamet, Christian Borle, Anika Noni Rose, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Steven Pasquale, Jesse L. Martin, Sasha Allen, Keala Settle, and Nicole Parker. Phil Reno will serve as Musical Director. Additional performers will be announced at a later date. Miscast 2014 will be held Monday, March 31, 2014 at The Hammerstein Ballroom (311 West 34th Street). The evening will begin with a cocktail hour and gala dinner followed by the Miscast performances. Show-only tickets are now on sale at www.mcctheater.org.

The State Theatre Center for the Arts announces the 2014 FREDDY Awards, the 12th year of the program, recognizing and rewarding exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theater in high schools in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania, and Warren County, New Jersey. The 2014 program will feature 31 schools, the most in the programs history, and will include a first time appearance by Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School who will present In the Heights in April.

t was announced today that Joey Parnes Productions and EMURSIVE (Randy Weiner, Arthur Karpati, andJonathan Hochwald, Principals) will bring The Public Theater's production of David Byrne and Alex Timbers' smash hit musical, Here Lies Love, back to The Public Theater's LuEsther Hall (425 Lafayette Street, New York City) for an open-ended commercial run. Under the direction of Alex Timbers,Here Lies Love played a critically raved-about, sold-out run last year at the same space, which was extended by popular demand four times. This new production will begin performances on Monday, March 24, 2014, and will officially open in early April. Here Lies Love was conceived by David Byrne, and features lyrics by Byrne, music by Byrne and Fatboy Slim, additional music by Tom Gandey and J Pardo, and choreography by Annie-B Parson. Battersea's new writing powerhouse - Theatre503 - announces a season of groundbreaking plays for spring 2014. Kicking off from today 14 January is an adaptation of Abe Kobo's 1962 Japanese novel WOMAN IN THE DUNES, followed by the previously announced world premiere of A WORLD ELSEWHERE by Times journalist Alan Franks - a thrilling play where Oxford University, Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War all collide.
