Okay, let's just get real for a moment: if one approaches this show as an adult and compares it with the canon of theatrical literature, this a production which often falls flat. However, in comparison to average children's entertainment (which is clearly the producers' targeted demographic) it holds up well. Your average elementary aged kid will be thoroughly and utterly charmed. But the parents who brought them? That might be a different story. The performers are all supremely talented, with dozens of Broadway shows to their credit. Even if I felt they might have been instructed to push every moment, they still allow their glorious voices to shine through. While it doesn't run in the same league as the classic Disney films, this production does its job: providing fluffy entertainment for an evening out after school, getting through everything as quickly as possible to make sure the kids get back home in bed to be ready for school tomorrow.

The dysfunctional family drama has long been a staple in American theatre, only the particulars of the dysfunction change to reflect the times. In Taylor Mac's Hir, Isaac Connor (Neil Brewer) is a Marine discharged from active duty collecting dead bodies from a war zone, returns to his California home to find his mother, Paige (Teresa Willis). has abandoned all sense of order and has clothes, food, and other life detritus strewn around the house. His stroke victim father, Arnold (Michael Drury) sits in a house dress and rainbow clown wig behaving like a toddler, and his sister, MAx (Megan Adair) is trans gender, preferring to be addressed as 'hir' (rhymes with here) or 'Zee.' For a soldier used to the severe discipline of the military, the chaos is nearly intolerable.
Neck and neck, the only thing that separates the candidates are the endorsements from a respected Ex-President (Jack Shepherd) and party big-wig (Gemma Jones).

It was fifty years ago that The Summer of Love attracted throngs of lunatics, lovers and poets to New York's Central Park in a free-spirited embrace of life's passions and pleasures. That same spirit is now joyously celebrated in the park's Delacorte Theater, where director Lear deBessonet's luscious, lusty and laugh-out-loud funny production of Shakespeare's fantasy comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM offers an evening of ravishing enchantment.

The curtain set sail as the orchestra led an overture riddled with recognizable tunes. Two rows behind me, an adorable little girl clad in turquoise fins and a long red wig bounced up and down in her seat, eager for the show to begin. From behind a brilliantly dressed proscenium, Diana Huey popped out through playful bubbles, singing "This is where I belong!" to open the 5th Avenue Theatre's touring production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. Huey, who leads as Ariel, is absolutely accurate in her first lines. Masterfully assuming the role of the stubborn little mermaid with a show-stopping voice, Huey is joined by a stellar cast of theatrical strength.
Just announced, Masterworks Broadway and Broadway Records are partnering to release the Original Broadway Cast Album for Groundhog Day The Musical.
Roundabout Theatre Company's North American tour of its award-winning CABARET revival is a stunning production that stands out in high relief to the theatrics playing in our nation's capital. Fifty years after the pre-Broadway Kander and Ebb musical tried out in Boston, the show still packs a punch. Randy Harrison is mesmerizing as the Emcee, eschewing any references to the powerhouse pair of actors who preceded him in the role.
Angelica Page stands quietly stage left and watches a home movie of herself on a giant rear screen. She sees a seemingly innocent little girl running around and playing with her mother Geraldine Page. When the film is over, she steps forward ever so slowly into the spotlight and addresses the audience fearlessly, 'My mother is haunting me.' At that precise moment, we sense we are in good hands. The family talent assuredly has rubbed off on Angelica Page, and we are in for a brilliantly honed theatrical evening.
The first in Stages Repertory Theatre's 2017 Get Talking Series that highlights important voices in contemporary theatre - Who Am I This Time (& Other Conundrums of Love) by Aaron Posner and adapted from stories by Kurt Vonnegut, makes its regional premiere in Houston on January 25 and runs through February 12. Directed by long-time Stages and Houston actor and director Sally Edmundson (Driving Miss Daisy, Auntie Mame, Amy's View), Who Am I This Time takes a good-natured look at love and the conundrums that accompany it through the interconnected stories of three couples, all set against the backdrop of North Crawford Mask & Wig Club - 'the finest community theatre in central Connecticut.' The play's New England everyman narrator and the poignant, often comic look at daily life and relationships are gently reminiscent of Thornton Wilder's classic Our Town.
A show is a product of design-from the lights that you see to the sound that surrounds you to the hair on top of the actors' heads. Hair and wig designers help define characters, though their work largely goes unnoticed.
