BWW Review: BEAUTIFUL THING at Desert Rose Playhouse is, indeed, a Beautiful Thing
by Audrey Liebross - Mar 13, 2020

Jonathan Harvey's 1993 BEAUTIFUL THING is rightfully part of the pantheon of gay-oriented theatre. Desert Rose Playhouse's beautiful production does justice to this seminal play. BEAUTIFUL THING will run through March 29, 2020, at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets cost between $34 and $37.

BWW Review: HENRY IV, PART 1 Sets 'Fire' to the 'Reign' at Orlando Shakes
by Albert Gutierrez - Mar 2, 2020

A few weeks back, I attended the opening night of The Three Musketeers at Orlando Shakes. I marveled, in particular, at a rotating stage and staircase designed by Bert Scott. The way the production team used that stage always impressed me. Imagine my delight when I came back to Orlando Shakes for the opening weekend of HENRY IV, PART 1 and saw that same exact stage now being used to represent 1492 England rather than 1628 France. Part of it is my fault, I didn't know they'd be using the same stage and assumed another theatre space at Orlando Shakes would house HENRY IV. But now knowing that this same space was used for two plays got the wheels in my head turning. It's a genius move on Orlando Shakes' part, creating a very fitting double-feature of entertainment. The same cast, the same stage, but two wholly different stories unfold.

BWW Review: GRUMPY OLD MEN at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre
by Rich Mehrenberg - Feb 20, 2020

One of the Act 1 numbers in Grumpy Old Men the Musical is titled, 'I Like The Way Things Are'. The lyrics deal with a dislike for change and a strong appreciation for 'the good old days'. This message could also extend to the musical itself. The show is based on the very funny and very popular 1993 movie of the same name starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret. It begs the question, why mess with success?

BWW Interview: Miranda Jane of GRUMPY OLD MEN at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre
by Andrea Stephenson - Feb 14, 2020

The romantic comedy Grumpy Old Men first came to life as a film in 1993 starring Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret. With book by Dan Remmes, music by Neil Berg, and lyrics by Nick Meglin, Grumpy Old Men was adapted to the stage as a musical described by critics as 'unconventional but sincerely sweet' (Leo Buck at buckingtrends.me). Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre takes on this delightful story of friendship and love February 20-March 28. Miranda Jane plays the role of Ariel, Max and John's beautiful and eccentric neighbor.

BWW Interview: Clark Gregg Navigating From the Marvel Universe Back to David Mamet's
by Gil Kaan - Feb 10, 2020

An enduring member of the Marvel universe (both cinematic and TV) as Agent Phil Coulson, Clark Gregg will be making his Los Angeles stage acting debut in his long-time friend David Mamet's new play THE CHRISTOPHER BOY'S COMMUNION. Slated for an eleven-performance run at the Odyssey beginning February 13, 2020; this cast includes: Fionnula Flanagan, Dominic Hoffman, William H. Macy, David Paymer, Rebecca Pidgeon and John Pirrucello. I managed to catch Clark for a quick phoner.

HERE Will Present Kalan Sherrard's KOSMOS INVERS: THE MORPHOLOGY OF XOS
by Chloe Rabinowitz - Feb 6, 2020

As the Earth crumbles around us and we continue to kill everything in our path, it is time we face the paradoxic integration of evils within ourselves: sterility and garbage, meaninglessness, sexuality as the sin of origin, the contradictory drives of human things. KOSMOS INVERS is the creation of two inverse planets filled with bizarre otherworldly puppets: one, an Edenic parallel of our green earth; and the other, its tentacled pink opposite. Strange fragments of stories coalesce through the contours of different biomes piecing together a patchwork of utopian armageddon and weird psychological metaphors with a green cosmic bent.

Theatre West Will Present the World Premiere of OUR MAN IN SANTIAGO
by Chloe Rabinowitz - Jan 29, 2020

Intrigue and laughter, bodies and mayhem. Theatre West presents the world premiere of a comic spy thriller inspired by the true story of a spectacularly botched U.S. attempt to overthrow Chile's democratically elected leader. Our Man in Santiago, written by two-time Emmy nominee and WGA award-winner Mark Wilding (Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Good Girls, Charmed) and directed by Charlie Mount, opens at Theatre West on March 13, with performances continuing through April 5. Two low-priced previews take place March 11 and March 12.

BWW Review: Say 'Helloooo' to MRS. DOUBTFIRE at the 5th Avenue
by Jay Irwin - Dec 14, 2019

There was no one like Robin Williams. Let's just state that right now. And when you think of Robin Williams, many gravitate towards his 1993 comedy smash a?oeMrs. Doubtfirea?? where he created an enduring, iconic character as a divorced father who posed as a female nanny in order to remain in the lives of his kids. No one can deny the brilliance of that performance and I will fight anyone who wants to try. Well, now we have a new musical version of a?oeMrs. Doubtfirea?? heading to Broadway and currently playing at the 5th Avenue Theatre. And while I recognize the impetus of putting Euphegenia Doubtfire up on stage, I also had serious anxiety over it. Would it just be a rehash of the same jokes? Would the music be any good? And would anyone be able to match the brilliance of Williams in the role? Well, after last night I can answer those questions with yes, but well handled, yes, to an extent, and YES, give that man a Tony. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's break it down into the three components of the show; the music, the heart, and the comedy.

by Michael Dale - Nov 15, 2019

While there are many artistically pleasing moments to be savored on stage as the entrancingly funny Russian clown piece SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW returns to Broadway for a limited run through the holiday season, you can also have a heck of a good time if you just like having things thrown at you, dropped on you, sprayed at you or bouncing off of you.

BWW Blog: The Blend of Musical Theatre and Horror
by Student Blogger: Emily Bonifacio - Oct 14, 2019

College can be extremely stressful sometimes, especially after midterms, which I just experienced last week. However, there are many ways to destress and unwind due to the pressure and trials of school and watching musical films are a perfect way to do just that and what better time of the year to do that than around Halloween time? There are so many amazing Halloween and horror films and surprisingly there are also a lot of horror musicals that are simply fantastic.
