Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) today announced a new initiative, a three-week, multi-disciplinary Bach Festival featuring 15 concerts across three venues in Manhattan, June 6-22, 2019. My heart is full for many reasons, not the least of which is that I can say, henceforth, that the last production of Steel Magnolias that I reviewed - this one at The Larry Keeton Theatre in Donelson through Saturday, September 1 - was almost as good as that very first production I saw in Chicago in the summer of 1988. In fact, direct Donna Driver and her cast deliver a reading of Steel Magnolias that is as close to what Robert Harling wrote more than 30 years ago as any I've ever seen.

Four films tell the stories of four artists: Eva Hesse, the 1960s art world icon who changed art history and women's place in the picture; New York contemporary art maverick Elizabeth Murray; painter Andrew Wyeth, one of America's most popular, but least understood, artists; and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the New York graffiti artist turned '80s art world rock star who died 30 years ago (August 12, 1988). Liss Fain Dance Presents 'I Don't Know and Never Will: A Recomposition'

Young People's Chorus Of New York City Named “Choir Of The World” At International Kathaumixw Competition

The Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC), led by Associate Artistic Director Elizabeth Nuñez, was named "Choir of the World" following two first-place wins in the 'Children's Choir' and 'Contemporary Choral Music' categories at the 18th biennial International Choral Kathaumixw competition and festival in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada, from July 3-7, 2018. Festival Artistic Director Walter Martella announced YPC as the "Choir of the World" during closing ceremonies on Saturday, July 7. YPC is the first North American choir to win the title in the competition's more than 30-year history.

POV recently acquired the U.S. broadcast rights for306 Hollywood by Elan and Jonathan Bogarín.  The film will join POV's early 2019 schedule with AmDoc/POV Co-production Minding the Gap by Bing Liu, which announced last week a Hulu Originals acquisition for an August 2018 theatrical and streaming release. These 2019 films build on POV's recent announcements regarding the acquisition of On Her Shoulders and The Silence of Others.

Totem Pole Playhouse Presents AIN'T MISBEHAVIN'

Totem Pole Playhouse, America's beloved summer theatre, located in Caledonia State Park between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, PA, will present the Tony Award-winning musical Ain't Misbehavin' beginning this Sunday, June 17th through July 1st. The show features the music of acclaimed American Jazz pianist, singer, and composer Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller and contains such classic songs as "Honeysuckle Rose," "The Joint is Jumpin'," "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," plus 25 other toe-tapping songs of the 1920s and 30s. Aint' Misbehavin' won the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, as well as a 1982 Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical or Variety Program. This is the first time this award-winning musical has ever been presented at Totem Pole Playhouse. Ain't Misbehavin' features a cast of five vocalists with a live jazz band on stage throughout the two-hour show.

Playwrights Selected For The 20th Anniversary Of JAW!

This summer, JAW: A Playwrights Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary by doing what it does best: selecting some of the most exciting new plays of our time and providing complete support to the playwrights to develop those scripts in whatever area is most beneficial to them. Two weeks of script workshopping will culminate in the JAW Big Weekend, July 27-29, where public staged readings of the scripts will be presented along with performances from local artists and classes. Plenty of champagne and birthday cake will also be enjoyed, to celebrate all that JAW has accomplished since its brave and ambitious beginnings in 1999.

Trinity Rep Announces The 2018 Local Pell Award Honorees

Trinity Repertory Company announced today that three area residents will be honored at its 2018 Pell Awards Gala on Monday, May 21, 2018 in Providence.  Pawtucket-based designer and artist Morris Nathanson will receive a Rhode Island Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts. Longtime Providence philanthropist and arts advocate Jane S. Nelson will receive the Charles Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts. The Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts will go to Jeannine Chartier in recognition of her work with VSA arts Rhode Island. Additional honorees will be announced at a later date.
