Starlight Theatre employees fanned out across the city yesterday to deliver 2010 Blue Star Award nominations to local high school theatre students and instructors. The good news of nominations in 20 Blue Star Award categories was delivered to high schools throughout the metropolitan area and outlying communities. On Thursday night, May 27, at Starlight, those nominees will find out whether they'll take home this year's top honors.
The Hollywood Bowl previously announced Vannesa Hudgens for the role of Mimi in its production of RENT, which will have three performances August 6, 7, and 8. Today the Bowl is announcing additional casting, led by Emmy winner and Grammy nominee Wayne Brady in the role of Tom Collins.
Civic Theatre of Allentown's 82nd stage season has been finalized, and we're thrilled to officially announce that the biggest musical of the past 15 years is coming to Civic's stage. What a way to end the Center Stage Cabaret Series. Baltimore native and Baltimore School for the Arts graduate, Tracie Thoms, rocked the Head Theatre before a sell-out crowd filled with family and friends Thursday evening. Thoms made a name for herself playing the role of Joanne in the film version of Rent (and even performed with the Broadway cast) and now has a recurring role on the CBS television show , 'Cold Case.'
Jonathan Larson's Rent will open June 24 at the Firehouse Theatre Project as its special summer production.
CHESS opened at the Signature Theatre on August 10 and will run through September 26. Chess is being performed in the fabulous intimacy of the 276-seat MAX Theatre.

The rumors aren't totally out of the realm of possiblity as Timberlake is said to have enjoyed all three nights of girlfriend Jessica Biel's performance in GUYS & DOLLS at the Hollywood Bowl last summer.
The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) and Signature Theatre Company (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin) announced today that the New York premiere of Tony Kushner's THE INTELLIGENT HOMOSEXUAL'S GUIDE TO CAPITALISM AND SOCIALISM WITH A KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES will be presented in the 2010-2011 season in a co-production between The Public Theater and Signature Theatre Company, in association with the Guthrie Theater. Michael Greif, who directed the world premiere at the Guthrie in April, 2009, will direct the New York premiere, which will play March 22-June 12, 2011 at The Public Theater. Casting will be announced at a later date.
Shadowbox will keep performing Back to the Garden at least through Spring 2010 and has scheduled Rent for Fall 2010.
This year's Critics Circle Awards, sponsored by Actor's Equity Association, today announced is nominees for excellence in San Francisco Bay area theater. Berkeley Rep's production of American Idiot, which played in the fall of 2009, leads with 12 nominations and will open on Broadway this spring.
