Today in 1999, Annie Get Your Gun opened at the Marquis Theatre, where it ran for 1045 performances.Annie Get Your Gun is a musical with lyrics and music written by Irving Berlin and a book by Herbert Fields and his sister Dorothy Fields. The story is a fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley (1860-1926), who was a sharpshooter from Ohio, and her husband, Frank Butler. Songs that became hits include 'There's No Business Like Show Business', 'Doin' What Comes Natur'lly', 'You Can't Get a Man with a Gun', 'They Say It's Wonderful', and 'Anything You Can Do.'

Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) brings Neil Simon's comic masterpiece about show business, friendship and growing old, 'The Sunshine Boys' to Arizona audiences. David Ira Goldstein directs one of Neil Simon's most beloved and acclaimed plays in ATC's new production that will premiere in Tucson for three weeks of performances and continue to Phoenix for an additional three weeks. ATC's 'The Sunshine Boys' opens at the Temple of Music and Art, running from tonight, March 2, 2013 through March 23, 2013. It continues its run in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center from March 28, 2013 through April 14, 2013.

Jeff Calhoun to Award $5,000 Scholarship to Pine-Richland Student

Broadway director and choreographer Jeff Calhoun will soon award the Jeff Calhoun Performing Arts Award to a senior at Pine-Richland High School. This is the sixth year that Calhoun, a 1978 graduate, will award a $5000 scholarship to a student who is planning to pursue a career in the performing arts and meets the scholarship criteria. Applications for this scholarship are due April 19, 2013.

2013 promises to be a banner year for Tom Wopat. From the Feb. 12 release of his eighth recording I've Got Your Number, to his role in Quentin Tarrantino's highly anticipated film Django Unchained, (released 2012 Christmas) and the release of the ABC -TV family musical movie Lovestruck, in which he stars with Jane Seymour. While one can't help recall his starring role in the '80's hit television series The Dukes of Hazzard, it is Tom Wopat, jazz vocalist and the Tony nominated star of Broadway that's been garnering high critical acclaim for the last two decades.

Happy Birthday Tom Wopat! Wopat first appeared on the Broadway stage as a replacement in the 1977 musical I Love My Wife, as 'Wally'. He then appeared as a replacement in the stage musicals City of Angels, and Guys and Dolls. He finally appeared in the opening cast of the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun opposite Bernadette Peters, Susan Lucci and Crystal Bernard, who played Annie Oakley. In 2008, Wopat starred on Broadway as the father in the musical A Catered Affair, and received his second Tony nomination for that performance. Wopat recently originated the role of Frank Abignale, Sr. in the musical Catch Me if You Can.

Philadelphia's Broadway dreams will come true for the fourth consecutive summer when The Broadway Dreams Foundation (BDF) partners with The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts to present their Summer Performing Arts Intensive July 30 through August 5, 2012. Jason Robert Brown, Tony Award winner for Parade, and a faculty of Broadway professionals will teach master classes during the week to aspiring Philadelphia area students interested in pursuing a career in musical theatre. A week's end, the Broadway faculty will perform alongside BDF students in "Express Yourself," a unique concert event directed by acclaimed New York director Matt Lenz (Hairspray, Beauty and the Beast) at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts' Perelman Theater on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 3 pm and 8 pm.
