Howard Palmer was born October 11, 1907 in the small coastal town of Waldport, Ore. His life was one marked by change and challenges, mirroring that of a changing United States. Palmer was a hero to those who knew him, but passed away in 1988 unknown by the masses. Palmer's granddaughter, BC McGregor, set out to change that with the release in 2009 of the book, 'Life Stories of a Hero: Selections from the Poetry of Howard Palmer, Native Oregonian, 1907-1988' (published by iUniverse). The book will enjoy a renewed marketing push when it is featured at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair.

The Joffrey Ballet kicks off its 2013-14 'Masters of Dance' season with a special addition to its home engagement line-up, a one-weekend-only program titled 'Russian Masters' celebrating the centennial of Vaslav Nijinsky's ground-breaking 1913 ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), alongside George Balanchine's Allegro Brillante and two works byYuri Possokhov, the Chicago Premiere of Adagio and the return of his 2011 Joffrey commission, Bells. These four powerful works by Russian choreographers and composers are presented in four performances only in the Joffrey's home venue, the historic Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in downtown Chicago at 50 E. Congress Parkway, today, September 19 - 22.

The fledgling studio promptly established itself as one of the major film producers of the second golden age of Japanese cinema, specializing in low- to no-budget productions that have become absolute cult classics.

Japan Society Kicks Off ROBOT THEATER PROJECT Tonight

As part of its Fall 2012/Spring 2013 Performing Arts Season, Japan Society presents Seinendan Theater Company and Osaka University's Robot Theater Project, a double bill of one-act plays written and directed by Oriza Hirata. Co-presented with the Japan Foundation, this production plays three performances at Japan Society during a six-city North American tour. Performances at Japan Society (333 East 47th Street) are tonight, February 7, Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 at 7:30pm (running time: 75 minutes including intermission).
