Portland Shakespeare Project announces that its third season will include William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and John Fletcher's The Tamer Tamed (staged reading) running in rotating repertory, July 10 though August 4, 2013. Today in 1957, The Taming of the Shrew openend at the Phoenix Theatre, where it ran for 23 performances. A comedy by William Shakespeare, the play is believed to have been written between 1590 and 1591. The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments-the 'taming'-until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's more desirable sister, Bianca.

The Guthrie Theater continues its 2012-13 season with the British company Propeller's all-male, modern and physical productions of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Propeller artistic director Edward Hall. The two plays, performed in repertory (audiences can choose either show, or both on two different nights), come to the Guthrie as part of Propeller's international tour running through August 2013. Seattle Shakespeare Company will present a revival of its popular trailer park The Taming of the Shrew at the Playhouse at Seattle Center, April 25 through May 12, 2013. Many of the cast members from the original production will reprise their roles including Kelly Kitchens as Kate and David Quicksall as Petruchio. Directed by Aimée Bruneau, the production will also serve as a launch to the 20th Anniversary celebration of Wooden O in the summer of 2013.
