The New York Times reports today that Will Swenson (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Hair) will direct independent feature film adaptation of Carol Lynn Pearson's play 'Facing East.' Pearson is also writing the screenplay. The play centers on a family's struggle to come to terms with their Morman faith after losing their gay son to suicide. The subject mater is not far from Swenson's heart, as he witnessed similar struggles within his own childhood Mormon community. Say Swenson of the project: 'Getting through my own adolescence as a young Mormon was challenging as it was, but watching my best friend struggle with his identity as a gay teenager was heartbreaking.'

Photo Flash: Liza Minnelli Meets Lady Gaga at Madison Square Garden!
by Robert Diamond - Feb 23, 2011

In the audience at last night's concert were special guests, including Marisa Tomei, Liza Minnelli and Billy Stritch. Lady Gaga recognized both from the stage, and told a story to the audience about how Minnelli was an inspiration to her. She talked about her origins at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, mentioning how her acting and performance teachers told her she didn't have what it took, essentially, to 'be a superstar.' 'You'll never be the main character... the blonde... your hair's too dark... you look too ethnic' To retort in the face of such opposition, Gaga would reply, 'What about Liza?' She then asked the audience to give Liza a standing ovation, which they did to an obviously thrilled Minnelli. The moment was filmed, though there's no word if it'll make the cut for her May 7th TV special. Here's hoping! Afterwards, Liza and her longtime brilliant musical collaborator and friend Billy Stritch made their way backstage and Stritch was kind enough to share his personal photos with BroadwayWorld.com.

BWW Reviews: ROCK OF AGES Comes Home to L.A.
by Michael L. Quintos - Feb 21, 2011

When did the Pantages Theatre turn into a nostalgia rock concert venue? 2011 so far has featured 60's-set HAIR and the 1891 emo rockers of SPRING AWAKENING and now, it plays host to the national tour of ROCK OF AGES, the surprising yet undeniably hilarious Tony-nominated jukebox musical that features a conveyor belt of rock hits from the biggest hair bands of the 1980's. This affectionately low-brow but impressively entertaining show charms the leather pants of its audience thanks to its wicked humor, its self-effacing references, plenty of nostalgic sight-gags, and, of course, those ubiquitous 80's tunes most of us won't admit to really liking. Playing at the Pantages through February 27 (then at the Segerstrom Center of the Arts in Orange County, March 1-6), it's certainly a show chock-full of guilty pleasures.

Seattle's Paramount Theatre is currently letting the sun shine in with the national tour of the Tony Award winning revival of the 60's rock musical "Hair". And while I've never been a fan of the show that much before, I can tell you that with this production I left the theater with what I can only describe as a theatrical contact high.
