HartBeat Ensemble to Perform 'Best of' the Last 5 Years of Free Plays in the Parks, 7/10-25

This summer, HartBeat Ensemble will celebrate the 5th anniversary season of its annual free Plays in the Parks with a rousing revival, 'The Best Of...' its first four seasons. The family-friendly plays will tour through six outdoor venues in Hartford over the course of three July weekends, beginning on Saturday July 10th. Plays in the Parks is the signature event of HartBeat Ensemble's mission to provide original, affordable, and professional theater to the people of Greater Hartford. The series invites its audiences to lounge in the grass while taking in a different combination of short plays each weekend.

The City of Cleveland Heights and Cain Park proudly announce that Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by Hugh Wheeler) opens Cain Park's 2010 season in the Alma Theater June 11-27 (preview June 10). Paul Gurgol, founder/artistic director of Kalliope Stage, directs this 1979 Tony Award-winning musical thriller with music direction by Jodie Ricci.

Previews will begin today at Virginia's Signature Theatre for the world premiere musical Sycamore Trees written by Ricky Ian Gordon, the award-winning composer of the opera The Grapes of Wrath and the musicals Dream True and My Life with Albertine. A starry Broadway cast portrays Gordon's own family story - complete with a tough Bronx-born father and former 'Borscht Belt' singer/comedian mother - in a tale of two generations' struggles and triumphs in the decades from World War II through the 1990s.
