The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's 2017-18 season has brought an exhilarating year of music education and performances to over 120 talented musicians, ages 14 to 21, marking the organization's 78th Anniversary. The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra 78th Annual Festival Concert will feature the World Premiere of Manhattan Nights by Kevin Day, who is the Second Annual Young Composers Competition Winner, A Salute to Leonard Bernstein with Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40. The concert will take place on Sunday, June 10, at 3 p.m., in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Capping off their 2017-18 season, the organization's recent West Side Story Ball allowed the organization to showcase their strong vocalists while celebrating famed composer Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday. A festive evening such as this also underscored the importance of choral performances in classical spaces like churches: it makes the performance ten times better.

George Street Playhouse's Annual Gala Benefit, held Sunday, May 6, at the Heldrich in downton New Brunswick, saw GSP Board President Dr. Penelope Lattimer honored with the Thomas H. Kean Arts Advocacy Award. The black-tie event also celebrated the work of renowned playwright and friend of the Playhouse, the late Arthur Laurents, who would have turned 100 this year, with performances of songs from West Side Story, Gypsy, La Cage aux Folles, and his other Broadway hits.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works Musical Theater grant of $10,000 to CMT San Jose for their summer Mainstage production of West Side Story. The Art Works category is the NEA's largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.

Director Richard Israel is returning to Actors Co-op to helm the musical Violet. At the Co-op he has previously directed Our Town, The Baker's Wife and 110 In The Shade (LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award Winner for Outstanding Musical in an Intimate Venue), among others. Most recently, Richard was the Theatrical Coordinator for the multiple Emmy-award winning HBO series Big Little Lies, directing all of the Avenue Q sequences in the series. Regional theatre credits include West Side Story, Rent and Floyd Collins (LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards for Direction and Outstanding Musical in a Large Venue) for McCoy-Rigby Ent.; Kiss Me Kate and Once Upon A Mattress for Cabrillo Music Theatre; the multiple Ovation award-nominated Having It All for the Laguna Playhouse; and Meet Me In St. Louis for MTW. Intimate theatre productions include Bronies The Musical, The Burnt Part Boys, The Full Monty, Avenue Q, Gypsy, Assassins, Big The Musical and the world premiere of Anita Bryant Died For Your Sins. As a resident director for the Musical Theatre Guild, he has directed Women On The Verge, Do I Hear A Waltz, Road Show, High Fidelity and many others. He is recipient of the LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Career Achievement in Directing.

The esteemed Fort Worth Youth Orchestra (FWYO) will celebrate its 53rd Season Finale at Bass Performance Hall on May 20, 2018, featuring special performances from each of its four ensembles. Participating in the worldwide celebration of 'Bernstein at 100,' the FWYO will commemorate the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein by performing popular orchestral arrangements of his compositions: Overture to Candide and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. In addition, guest soloist Pui Ying Wong and the Youth Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's formidable Violin Concerto.
