Chicago Humanities Festival Announces 25th Anniversary Fall Festival, 10/25-11/9

The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) announcesJourneys as the theme for the 25th Anniversary Fall Festival. More than 80 programs will take place in and around Chicago Oct. 25-Nov. 9, 2014 as part of the annual arts and ideas festival. Confirmed 2014 presenters include jazz composer-pianist Vijay Iyer, NYU professor and scholar of travel narratives Mary Louise Pratt, Top Chef Masters winnerMarcus Samuelsson, graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi, TV/film actress Victoria Tennant, and author/playwright Colm Toibin. A complete schedule will be released in August at chicagohumanities.org/journeys. Tickets to the 25th Anniversary Chicago Humanities Festival go on sale to CHF members on Tuesday, Sept. 2 and to the general public on Monday, Sept. 8.

SINCE AFRICA, a new play by Mia McCullough about a Lost Boy of Sudan-- both lost in his native land and lost as he attempts to adjust to his new home in America - will be given its NY premiere following successful productions at San Diego's Old Globe, Philadelphia's InterAct, and Chicago Dramatists theatres with performances, starting February 20 and an official press opening on February 23 in a production by New York's Red Fern Theatre Company at The Theater at the 14th Street Y (344 E. 14 St. between 1st and 2nd Ave. in NYC). Abraham Deng Ater Releases Memoir, MY LOST CHILDHOOD

In the late 1980s, the Islamic government began to systematically torture and kill Southern Sudanese families, burn their villages and enslave young boys and girls. The actual numbers are unknown but it is estimated that more than 27,000 boys from southern tribes were forced to flee from their homes. Beyond the statistics are harrowing stories of survival and of young boys whose lives are changed forever by unfathomable tragedy. Abraham Deng Ater is one of the survivors of that horrific period in Sudanese history and in his new book, 'My Lost Childhood,' he shares his story.
