Next To Normal, the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning rock musical, written by Brian Yorkey with music by Tom Kitt, will be presented by Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for a three week run beginning on April 5. Next To Normal was nominated for eleven Tony Awards in 2009, and won three, including Best Original Score. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, being only the eighth musical to win that honor. The Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical...that expands the scope of subject matter for musicals".Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy, and heart.
