Seattle Public Theatre Presents SUPERIOR DONUTS, 9/21-10/21

By:

Seattle Public Theater (SPT) opens its 2012-2013 season with the Seattle Premiere of Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Tracy Letts' urban comedy-drama Superior Donuts running September 28-October 21, 2012 at the historic Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake.

The mean streets of Chicago show us their brighter side when Arthur, a world-weary draft evader and disillusioned donut shop proprietor, hires Franco, a streetwise would-be novelist. But their unlikely bond of one-part snark and three-parts hope is put to a violent test when Franco's past catches up to him.

"It's a very American story," says Director, Russ Banham, "about a man who at one time had the courage of his convictions. But now, his refusal to fight is a weak escape. Along comes a young man full of hope, full of promise, who offers him a chance to fight for something again. It's a story full of juice, of catharsis and tension and humor and pathos…and it's a story of how race continues to inform our decisions and actions."

"Russ Banham is a wonderful director for this play," says SPT Artistic Director, Shana Bestock, "His vision, background, and style breathe authenticity onstage and create discreet, specific cultural landscapes. Russ coaxes nuanced, dynamic, and sensitive performances out of his actors and offers his audience powerful, provocative, yet always engaging and theatrical entertainment. His Of Mice and Men was pitch-perfect, his Mauritius was a complete crowd-pleaser, and I expect no less from Superior Donuts!"

SUPERIOR DONUTS performances run September 28-October 21, 2012. Tickets may be purchased by phone at (206) 524-1300 or online at www.seattlepublictheater.org
