A Jazzy Night That’s Not to be Missed

Melodic voices and the satisfying sound of tap shoes striking the stage are just two of the reasons why the latest addition at the 5th Avenue Theatre is a pleasure to witness. Alongside glorious set pieces and striking costumes, "After Midnight" offers a remarkable blend of history, culture, and tradition, making for an all-around enjoyable experience. Masterfully directed by Jay Santos, conceived by Jack Viertel, and featuring selected text by Langston Hughes, the show is now open and offers a truly wonderful time.

The show is presented as a musical revue, making it an appealing format for those who prefer shorter art forms. The revue offers a captivating look into Harlem, and its rich musical history. Throughout the show, the audience enjoys jazz pieces by renowned artists such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy McHugh, Dorothy Fields, and Harold Arlen. From “It Don’t Mean a Thing” to “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” the performers deliver incredibly strong renditions of recognizable and beloved music. Impressive vocals meet dance numbers that are as precise as they are passionate, with tender, slower songs adding moments of intimacy. Enhanced by an atmosphere that echoes the vibrancy of a Harlem nightclub, the revue captures not only the music but the spirit of the era, leaving the audience both entertained and deeply moved.

While the compilation of Jazz standards is impeccably performed, the script tying the numbers together occasionally feels disjointed and difficult to follow. Scenes shift abruptly, from a nervous proposal to a funeral, making it hard to trace the arc of each character. Despite this, the strengths of the show outshine any minor narrative confusions.

The highlight of the show is undoubtedly the live on-stage band, composed of talented local musicians from Seattle who are visibly thrilled to be performing onstage. Each musician showcases exceptional skill and immense passion. The band members include William Knowles (Music Director), Rebecca Smith, Chris Patin, Lamar Lofton, Brian Bermudez, Alex Dugdale, Owuor Arunga, Nathan Breedlove, and Beserat Tafesse. It is truly a delight to see these artists bring the music to life.

The cast features ten outstanding performers who bring all of the energy and passion to the 5th Avenue stage that this show requires. Iris Beaumier, Nicholas Japaul Bernard, Brian Davis, Nalica Hennings, Jason Holley, Nehemiah Hooks, Trina Mills, Yusef Seevers, Porscha Shaw, and Madison Willis.

Among the standout cast members is Porscha Shaw, who dazzles in a golden dress that is as striking as her voice. Her vocals, smooth as silk, shine in several show-stopping power ballads that hold the audience captive 'til the very last note. With commanding stage presence and a radiant tone, Shaw is a must-see in this role.

Equally memorable is Nalica Hennings. Her rendition of "Women Be Wise" is undoubtedly the most entertaining part of the show, capturing the audience's full attention throughout the number. Hennings has a remarkable ability to engage with the audience, creating a complete and immersive experience, leading to moments of laughter and gasps of admiration. Her solo is a completely unforgettable highlight of the evening.

A key highlight of this production is Yusef Seevers, who fittingly took the stage first, setting the tone for an explosive evening. Seevers is a performer whose captivating voice enchants the audience throughout the show. They are also an absolute joy to watch on stage.

Scenic designer Carey Wong and Costume Designer Ricky German deliver an impeccable creative vision that propels the show forward, showcasing the incredible talent gracing the stage.

Wong’s scenic designs are perfectly suited to the production, featuring bold colors and significant pieces that embody the essence of the show. The set allows the band to be prominently featured while also providing ample space for the characters’ voices to truly shine.

German’s costumes were eye-catching and stunning. His remarkable ability to tailor each costume to the individual actor and character results in distinctly unique looks for everyone. A particular standout is Shaw’s elegant golden dress.

After Midnight is a unique and entertaining experience that should not be missed at the 5th, with a rich history behind the music and talented actors who give their all to the lyrics, this guarantees a fun night.

After Midnight runs until August 24 at The 5th Avenue Theatre. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit: https://www.5thavenue.org/
