This month Seattle-based theatre artist Meme García will perform a new version of her evocative solo show House of Sueños at 18th & Union. A story of the construction and deconstruction of a house that is full of memories, family, and Shakespeare, House of Sueños was previously produced by Wyrd Sisters Productions at 18th & Union in November 2017. Wiley Basho Gorn returns to direct, having previously collaborated with Garcia on last fall's successful sold-out run. Performances begin on June 15 and run through June 24 at 18th and Union (1406 18th Avenue) in the Central District. Tickets are on sale now at www.18thandunion.org.
"This new version of House of Sueños is very different from what folks saw last fall," said Garcia. "it's more of a ghost story and I've streamlined it a lot. The story focuses more on how Hamlet, the play, has consumed my life, and the insecurities and anxieties which surround the process of creativity. It asks: Whose words are important? Why Shakespeare now? It's also a family drama, with two sisters trying to figure out who they are supposed to be in the face of a white patriarchal world. How strong is our blood? How strong is the tie of family? It's been quite thrilling to continue to work and develop this show-and it still isn't done. It's headed in a different direction and it still is growing into something longer."
Since writing House of Suenos for her senior honors project at Seattle University, García has continued to investigate her relationship with Shakespeare and new work and craft it into a personal and spellbinding piece of theatre. The previous version of the show, performed at 18th & Union in November 2017, saw a young woman return to her childhood house of dreams where she is drawn into an artistic love triangle between her passionate but deeply troubled sister, and Hamlet: the play and the prince. Now, the dreams and memories are starting to thaw and melt together as García searches for the ghost of her lost sister Rina with the text of Hamlet as her only guide. This new edition of House of Sueños dives into the dark waters of depression, anxiety, and bereavement while still opening the door to a realm of dreams, ambitions, and love.
