Find Your Personal SAFE SPACE with Annex This February In a post #metoo era, Season 31 at Annex Theatre begins 2018 with "Safe Space", a generative performance about brave middle schoolers who greet their problems with a smile and a meme.

Director Kyleigh Archer leads a generative process about how politicizing bodies can affect the most vulnerable of us in society, whether it is sexual assault or health care.

Medicaid budget cuts end a group therapy for middle school girls, who host a no holds barred slumber party to eulogize their experiences. But it's ending in pivotal moments in each of these girls' lives. Even for one night they cannot stop the outside forces that shape who they are: opioids, mental illness, slut shaming, and an inadequate foster system. These girls work together to shoulder the burden of living in a world, where suddenly, there are no "safe spaces." This is a slumber party full of secrets, the feels, and memes.

Annex welcomes a slew of newcomers to the stage-Devotion Charles, Kacy Caughlin-and some with an extensive pedigree-Intiman Emerging Artist and Bumbershoot's only drag king Sam Harrison, Kennedy Center Finalist Sarah Garcia, and Arizona Broadway Theatre performer Anasofia Gallegos. Annex also welcomes back Ashley Salazar (Research & Development), Danela Butler (Waning), and Caroline Rensel (Over & Under).

Community Partnership

For this production, Annex Theatre is partnering with Treehouse, a nonprofit that serves youth in foster care and Peace in the Streets, a nonprofit that helps "homeless and at-risk youth and young adults to become empowered to lead positive and self-sufficient lives." Director Kyleigh Archer is coordinating a donation drive on January 13 & 14.

Row Yr Boat (Achievement Unlocked)
Written by Wes K. Andrews
Directed by Catherine Blake Smith

Row Yr Boat (Achievement Unlocked) is a dark, surrealist romantic comedy about drones, video games, unreality and magic, set against the backdrop of the War on Terror. Rose T. O'Brien, an eccentric late-20s gamer with massive confidence issues and a deep competitive streak, goes looking for employment in the virtual reality sector at a major industry conference in Vegas. There, Rose is recruited as a sensor for Row Yr Boat LLC, a company with an unprecedented condition for employment: Rose must be married within the year or lose everything. The condition isn't unreasonable; it's for her mental health.

Annex Theatre is a democratic collective of theatre artists dedicated to creating bold new work in an environment of improbability, resourcefulness, and risk. We produce new plays by living playwrights, radical reinterpretations of classic scripts, and ensemble-generated non-linear spectacles. We've produced hundreds of world and regional premieres, including TPS's Gregory Awards Outstanding New Play recipients and nominees since 2011.
