Review: MY ROMANTIC HISTORY, Tron Theatre
My Romantic History runs at the Tron Theatre until 13 June
D.C. Jackson’s My Romantic History returns to the stage nearly 20 years after its premiere, presented by Tron Theatre Company and directed by Johnny McKnight.
Tom (Lewie Watson) is pretty fed up with dating. By your 30s, if you’re not with someone you met before graduation its most likely you’ll end up with someone from work. On his first day at a new job, he meets Amy and after post-work drinks on the Friday, they end up going home together.
Watson is ideal for the role of Tom, who you can’t quite decide whether to like or not. He’s funny and makes some good points about dating, but when Amy seems to want something more, he behaves like a prize tool in order to get her to dump him so he isn’t the bad guy.
The first half of My Romantic History focuses on Tom’s plight. He talks about his first love and how he’s never quite got over her, whilst whining that this belter from his work wants a relationship with him.
Then we flip to Amy’s perspective. Beautifully played by Rebecca Wilkie, we see the motivations behind this relationship and why she’s interested in Tom. She too had a first love, Calvin and the narrative goes between her student days and the present.
Julie Wilson Nimmo excels as Glasgow-uni accent-afflicted colleague Sasha who means well but keeps trying to get the rest of the office to come and see her samba drumming gigs. Covering a variety of characters throughout, she brings the biggest laughs to the performance.
My Romantic History is a clever, punchy, and fast-paced piece of theatre with strong performances. The dilemmas that Tom and Amy face today are as relevant as when the play was first staged, and it's a thrilling 90-minute whirlwind watch.
