EDINBURGH 2022: Pick of the Programme- Debut Edfringe shows

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is well known as a place to discover 'the next big thing'. BWW reviewer Natalie O'Donoghue has listed her top newcomers who are bringing their debut hour to the festival.

Cerys Bradley: Sportsperson

Sportsperson is written and performed by Cerys Bradley (Soho Theatre Young Company, Amused Moose semi-finalist, 2020). It's a show about playing sport and fitting in and how Cerys is quite bad at both of those things. It's also a show about being non-binary, embarrassed about wearing lycra and how spending your childhood in a car whilst your parents watch your brother play football (and rugby and tennis and cricket) definitely doesn't leave you with a massive chip on your shoulder.

The Sian Clarke Experience

An ode to every man who has belittled her, made her feel unsafe, objectified her, told her she can't be funny, called her a slut, told her to smile more... A dark, twisted comedic piece full of aggression and discomfort, examining the constraints of a woman biting back in a society eager to silence and vilify those no longer accepting its bullshit. That, or a show about a woman who needs to learn to take a joke. There will be barking, there will be screaming, there will be blood.

Jack Harris: Teaching Teachers How To Teach

Teacher-by-trade Jack's guide to everything the classroom may throw at you. Difficult questions. Problem pupils. Chairs. A jam-packed hour of gags, multimedia and, of course, teacher training

Jamie D'Souza: Stop Drawing Willies On My Poster

Join rising star Jamie D'Souza as he performs his highly anticipated debut stand-up show about the terrible teen emo band he was in and also his first school crush. He's definitely over it. As seen on Laugh Lessons (BBC3) and Comedy Central At The Fringe (Comedy Central), expect hilarious one liners and horrifically awkward tales of his teenage years.

Bella Hull: Babycakes

Have you ever wanted to hear a harrowing true story that really makes you think? Well neither has Bella Hull and that's why her debut show is full of stupid, stupid jokes. Contains never-before-heard gossip and scenes of a gorgeous nature. Viewer discretion advised if you're a little bitch.

Ali Woods: Best Friend Ever

Highly anticipated debut stand-up hour from the Hackney Empire New Comedian of the Year Winner, tackling all the big topics; Scottish mothers, sex parties, karate teachers, and mental breakdowns. During lockdown Ali was disappointed to discover he's a terrible friend. This is the hilarious and heartfelt story of how he tried to become more helpful and less... him.

Alex MacKeith: Thanks For Listening

Alex MacKeith (2020 Musical Comedy Awards winner) delivers his debut show. Join Alex and his guitar and hopefully other audience members on an acoustic odyssey of songs that are playful, dark and maximum three minutes long*. If you're looking for a sexy, confident musical comedian, by all means please find one and bring them to this.

Eric Rushton: I Had A Dream and You Were All In It

Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2020, Eric Rushton brings his highly anticipated debut hour to the festival. Ever since he was a little boy, Eric has dreamt of being a commercially viable stand-up comedian that could effortlessly entertain both you and your extended family. This is his chance to make that dream come true. Expect salty language, sweet facial expressions and hand gestures with far too much oregano on them.

Alice Brine: Brinestorm

One time, Alice got kicked out of an airport because her passport was covered in glow stick - and that's just the start. In her much-anticipated debut hour, the award-winning, sell-out New Zealand comedian rips the lid off the reality of life with ADHD.

Morgan Rees: Bi and Large

Debut hour from Welsh funnyman Morgan Rees. An hour full of 'fast gags, unexpected swerves and rolling stories' (Sunday Times). If you have ever wondered what it's like growing up with a nan 10 years older than you, an aunt who is a certified ghost hunter, and how a white boy from the Welsh Valleys was in line to be a prince in Nigeria, then this is the show for you. There is also a brief period about modern-day masculinity, but it's mainly jokes about bumming.
