BOOM BOOM BATTLE OF THE BIG BAD BOSSES to Make Edinburgh Fringe Debut

Yat Po Singers will present Boom Boom Battle of the Big Bad Bosses, a Hong Kong Soul showcase, an epic A Cappella theatrical battle from Hong Kong's first professional A Cappella group. Performances will run at Big at theSpaceTriplex, 7 – 15 August.

Inspired by one of China's most notorious 20th century crime bosses, Du Yuesheng, and other larger-than-life ‘big boss' underworld and cultural characters, Boom Boom Battle of the Big Bad Bosses is a fierce musical showdown blending rhythmic beats, vocal artistry, and body percussion. Five members of the Yat Po Singers with a Sheng artist reimagine legendary tales and epic rivalries as they duel for supremacy, through voice, beatboxing, and movement with each representing a different traditional Chinese instrument. Weaving together Hong Kong's rich cultural tapestry with traditional and contemporary Chinese music and movement, the production pushes the boundaries of A Cappella, transforming it into a high-octane theatrical experience packed with rhythm, humour, and dramatic tension.

Now in its fourth year at the Fringe, Hong Kong Soul is a contemporary platform that showcases the diversity and unique talents of Hong Kong artists. This year there are four shows:  Gemini / Romantic 4:48am (The Neighbours' Neighbour), 7-16 August at 17.30 at DanceBase, Boom Boom Battle of the Big Bad Bosses 7-15 August at 16.30 at Space UK Symposium Hall, Departure Is My Homecoming 7-15 August at midday at Space on the Mile and Sound Strokes: A Harmonious Blend of Chinese and Scottish Music, 8-15 August at midday Space UK Symposium Hall.

Director Yuri Ng said “Building on the success of last year's shows at the Fringe, we revisited an earlier production inspired by the legendary tales of gangster Du Yuesheng, whose name contains the same character and pronunciation as the traditional Chinese instrument 'Sheng'. The original piece used this connection to link his iconic life with Chinese music and tap dance. For this new version, we expanded the narrative to include gang ‘bosses' from different cultures, creating a more universal, cross-cultural story. We're excited to bring this revitalized, hybrid performance to Edinburgh, blending heritage with contemporary storytelling to resonate with audiences worldwide.”
