This critically-acclaimed musical review consists of 22 musical scenes dealing with the very special relationship between people and their pets. It's clever, user-friendly and suits audiences of all ages. Cats, dogs, mice, turtles, iguanas, parakeets and other species are having the times of their lives. The scenes range from a dog hungrily eyeing his owner's bagel in "There's a Bagel on the Piano" to the hilarious, harried Rumanian dog walker in "I Walk Ze Dogs" to the lonely Argentinian iguana pining for his mate in "Night of the Iguana." There is even a rock and roll number called "First Cat" and a celebratory musical piece devoted to smaller animals called "What About Us!" We share poignant and sensitive moments in "Dear Max" as a high school girl sings about going away to college and leaving her dog, and in "If You Can Stay" as we deal with the loss of a pet. The proud, stray cat sings a blues number "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" and there's a tribute to animal heroes, using true stories of animals that have saved human lives, in "All in a Day's Work.""A real charmer." (New York Newsday)"It touches the heartclever, fast-paced, urbane, and totally charming." (The Bergen Record, NJ)"Uniquesophisticatedand lots of fun." (New York Law Journal)"Hilariousleave[s] the audience cheering at intermission." (This Week on Stage)Sparklinggloriousa winner!" (Channel 5/Fox News, NY)

Cast and Creative Team for Pets! The Musical at Manatee Performing Arts Center

Creative Team

Alexander Zickafoose
Director
Alexander Zickafoose has been teaching at Booker High School for five long years and is going into his sixth. For the last four of these years, he has also served as the Director/Music Director for Spotlight Theatre Productions. One thing he often hears is that “You’re a busy person!” However, he loves to perform in the community on the side of his work because it allows him to learn and collaborate with his friends and express himself in ways that teaching cannot do. Alex does shows because he wants to have fun, and he believes the stage is the best place for it. Performing in roles such as the title role in Pippin, Jamie in The Last Five Years, Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Crutchie in Newsies, and Peter in Peter and the Starcatcher, Alex has had MANY amazing experiences performing in the community. A notable experience this summer was at the Asolo Repertory Theatre where he had the incredible opportunity to perform alongside students, community members, and professional actors and directors to put on a reading of a new Musical, Fountain. Learning brilliant new material from scratch, with such amazing people, has forever changed his outlook on performance and life. He is beginning to direct in the community, making his directorial debut in Pets later in the fall. It is a silly revue of songs about pets and their owners. He hopes this cute show will lead to larger endeavors down the line in directing at MPAC and other theaters in the area.
