Set in a Chicago recording studio in 1927, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom presents a group of musicians who gather to produce a record with the iconic Ma Rainey, known as the Mother of the Blues. While she commands respect in the studio, Rainey faces societal obstacles outside, illustrating the tension between artistic ambition and racial discrimination. Levee, a young trumpet player, grapples with his desire to innovate in a world resistant to change. Directed by Chuck Smith, this powerful drama unveils the complexities of identity and the cultural shifts of the Jazz Renaissance.
