Cinnabar Theater presents the West Coast premiere of "Emmeline" By Tobias Picker, based on the novel by Judith Rossner Libretto by JD McClatchey
Tobias Picker’s romantic score sets the mood for the retelling of the Oedipus story from Jocasta’s point if view. Based on Judith Rossner’s novel of the same name, the tale takes us back to the textile mills of Massachusetts in 1841, where 13-year-old Emmeline (portrayed by soprano Carrie Hennessey of Sacramento) is sent to help support her impoverished family. Times are hard but they pass and an older Emmeline finds love at last. But, a family reunion reveals terrible complications. Picker’s score is gloriously lush and romantic, emotionally true and uniquely American. Tobias Picker's first opera, "Emmeline" was commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera company and premiered in 1996.
