WICKED Breaks Box Office Records at Center for the Performing Arts

By:

The South Bay premiere of Broadway's biggest blockbuster, WICKED, has broken the box office record at San Jose's Center for the Performing Arts grossing $1,516,245 during the first week of a three-week engagement. This tops the previous record set by JERSEY BOYS one month prior. The phenomenon made its South Bay premiere on Wednesday, August 27. Performances of WICKED continue through Sunday, September 14. Seats for most performances are still available for the remainder of the run by visiting broadwaysanjose.com. For additional information or a complete schedule of performance dates and times, visit broadwaysanjose.com.

"We are thrilled with the tremendous response the Bay Area has given WICKED and Broadway San Jose during the engagement's first week," says Nanci Williams, general manager of Broadway San Jose. "By the end of the San Jose engagement, tens of thousands of patrons - many of who are visiting our theatre for the first time - will have experienced the magic of WICKED!"

WICKED has been declared "A Cultural Phenomenon" by Variety and "The Best Musical of the Decade" by Entertainment Weekly. WICKED currently has nine productions around the world, in New York, London, Japan, Australasian Tour, South Korea, Latin America, a U.K. Tour, and two concurrent North American National Tours. Since its New York premiere a decade ago, WICKED has grossed over $3.4 billion worldwide and has been seen by over 42 million across the globe. WICKED has been performed in over 100 cities in 13 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, and Mexico) and has thus far been translated into five languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Korean.

Winner of over 50 major awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, WICKED is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

The San Jose engagement of WICKED is presented by Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander Presentation.
