San Francisco Opera Education Presents Two Events for All Ages FIRST ACT: PAPAGENO'S POP-UP ADVENTURE & CarTUNE AFTERNOON Today

By:

San Francisco Opera Education presents two light-hearted programs to enchant and entertain all ages, and unveil its new John M. Bryan Education Studio: "First Act: Papageno's Pop-Up Adventure," a hands-on workshop for families with young children, and "CarTUNE Afternoon," a cozy popcorn and cereal snuggle-up with beloved cartoons featuring classical music, hosted by congenial storyteller Joshua Raoul Brody. "First Act: Papageno's Pop-Up Adventure" will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (tickets: $5), and "CarTUNE Afternoon" will be presented at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. (free admission) today, March 19 in the Bryan Education Studio at San Francisco Opera's new Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, located on the fourth floor of the Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco. For tickets and more information, visit www.sfopera.com/firstact and www.sfopera.com/cartuneafternoon or call (415) 864-3330.

Families with young children will have the opportunity to explore music, rhythm, visual arts and movement, in a program ideal for ages 3 to 5 with "First Act: Papageno's Pop-Up Adventure." The musical morning will take youngsters (accompanied by at least one parent or guardian) through a variety of delightful activities designed to foster social-emotional development, increased language and fine-gross motor skills, as they take an adventure through Mozart's The Magic Flute, which tells the story of a prince enlisted by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter from the hands of a sorcerer. With the aid of a magic flute, the prince sets out on a fantastic journey filled with danger and surprising twists. These two workshop sessions (9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) will be led by San Francisco Opera's teaching artists Rosalyn Nash, Katie Issel Pitre and Matt Wolka. Admission is $5 per person, and reservations can be made at www.sfopera.com/firstact.

In the afternoon, parents, families and adults who cherish cartoons can relive their favorite moments with Bugs Bunny, the Pink Panther, Animaniacs and other Looney Tunes characters for a cozy "CarTUNE Afternoon." Storyteller Joshua Raoul Brody will be on hand, in his own comfy chair, to narrate the afternoon, providing little-known facts, behind-the-scenes information and more. The audience is invited to snuggle on blankets and pillows, in addition to chair seating, to watch classic cartoons featuring symphonic music. To complete this cartoon binge-watching experience, popcorn, juice, cereal and milk will be available for $1 each. This event is free to the public, but reservations are suggested, and can be made at: www.sfopera.com/cartuneafternoon.

Called "an unsung hero" by the San Francisco Examiner, Joshua Raoul Brody has performed with comedy superstars such as Robin Williams, musicians such as Boz Scaggs, and appeared on television shows including Mork & Mindy, The Merv Griffin Show and The Mike Douglas Show. Brody has played in a wide variety of settings including the Universal Amphitheater, El Teatro Campesino, the Guthrie Theater and New York's Copacabana, among others. As an accompanist, he has worked with such performers as comedian Lily Tomlin and film legend Philip Kaufman. Brody has been nominated for a Bay Area Critics' Circle Award for "Best Score," won (with the Rick & Ruby Show) several Cabaret Gold Awards, and in 1991 was awarded the San Francisco Bay Guardian's first Guardian Outstanding Local Discovery (GOLDIE) Award.
