New Helvetia Theatre will present the rock musical HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at the Artisan Theatre this summer. Previews will begin June 3, 2009, with an opening scheduled for June 6, 2009. From there the production will run through June 27, 2009.
"HEDWIG tells the story of ‘internationally ignored song stylist' Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock' n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just ‘an angry inch.'" (courtesy of Dramatists Play Service, Inc.)

HEDWIG... features a book by John Cameron Mitchell, and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask.
Of the show, Rolling Stone offered: "In the whole long, sorry history of rock musicals, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the first one that truly rocks!"

Matthew Schneider, who comes to the production from New York, will make his directorial debut with HEDWIG.... Mr. Schneider's numerous performance credits include the Boston and St. Paul productions of Irving Berlin's White Christmas.

"As a director, I am thrilled to work with New Helvetia Theatre," Schneider says. "I am encouraged by the entire company's great love of their home, Sacramento, as well as their commitment to offering their hometown challenging, quality, professional theatre.

"Essentially, Hedwig is a rock'n'roll storyteller. We've employed a few fresh concepts and the work of local artists and musicians to enrich the character's telling of her story. Though HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is well known as a film, I think it is most successful on stage: the character's extraordinary journey, as well as her depth, tenderness, and volatility are best witnessed intimately and live. Without question, rock music is best live as well."
New Helvetia Theatre presents HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH in association with producers Nathan Gardner, and Karen Davidov. "I've always thought highly of Sacramento audiences," Gardner noted. "We're incredibly thrilled to be partnering with New Helvetia to bring this invigorating piece to the stage here. HEDWIG is more than a musical, it's an experience, and I can't wait to share it with our audiences every night."

Casting will be announced shortly.

Performances will be at New Helvetia's "home" in Sacramento, the Artisan Theatre, located at 1901 Del Paso Blvd in Sacramento, CA. For tickets, and other information, please visit www.newhelvetia.org.
