Randall Museum Hosts Cine/Club’s 15th Season Opens with Free Screening of Reitz’s Epic, HEIMAT I, 8/24-25

Cine/Club celebrates fifteen years of presenting free films for teenagers and adults along with lively discussions and film critiques. This historic fifteenth season of Cine/Club kicks off at Randall Museum Theater on on August 24 & 25 with a special free screening of Edgar Reitz's extraordinary 15-hour epic HEIMAT I for teenagers and adult film lovers. The screenings will take place over two days, today, August 24, from 5-11pm, and Saturday, August 25, from 1-11pm, with breaks for snacks and meals.

Reitz, one of Stanley Kubrich's favorite directors, has created in HEIMAT I not just a great motion picture--it's one of the richest, most deeply satisfying life-experiences the movies ever offered. SF ART & FILM begins its 20th anniversary with this free Cine/Club showing of  HEIMAT I (15 hours) and is opening the screening to film lovers around the Bay area for this rare screening. Viewers need stamina, the program's director Ronald Chase, advises. There will be snacks and sandwiches served at intermissions.

Imagine The White Ribbon, Triumph Of The Will, Wings Of Desire and Goodbye Lenin spliced together, Edgar Reitz's HEIMAT I is a century-spanning German epic that goes beyond this to achieve a force of rare inter-generational scope. In HEIMAT I, Reitz and co-writer Peter Steinbach portray the country's social mores, technological advances, political upheavals and human tragedies amidst the minutiae of everyday life, from berry-picking to bomb defusal, from gentrification to prostitution, from pesticides to genocide.

Lead Marita Breuer's matriarch, Maria, is supported by an inexperienced but universally outstanding cast, it won a Special Prize at the Venice Festival and has been described as one of the "100 Best Films Of World Cinema"  HEIMAT I is War And Peace and all the bits in between, history written by the losers.

Cine/Club (a program of SF ART & FILM) offers students free screenings of classic, foreign and art films during the school year, September through June. Screenings include a cartoon, excerpts from related films or a famous short film, a feature, and a group discussion. Cine/Club invites parents, mentors, filmmakers and critics to join in the discussions that follow the presentation. Films are chosen to give students a background in the history of serious film and to thrill and excite them about the scope and breadth of great filmmaking. The discussion helps students explore their ideas in depth.
