ABOUT THE SHOW
Beautiful Thing tells the story of two teenage boys in working class London who embark upon an unexpected romance. Harvey's play premiered at a small London theater in 1993, and its successful run led to a West End transfer and a 1996 feature film. The play received its U.S. stage premiere in Chicago in early 1998, and later that year Beautiful Thing made it's West Coast stage premiere at NCTC. The show quickly became a sold-out hit in the Walker Theatre, prompting a return engagement in the larger Decker Theatre during the 1999 - 2000 Pride Season. Now, Beautiful Thing returns to NCTC in a revival directed by Andrew Nance, who played Tony in the 1998 production.
This tender and funny love story, set in a South London housing project, tells the tale of Jamie Engel, a shy young man and Ste, his charming and handsome next door neighbor. The boys' attraction to one another is quickened by Ste's difficult home life and the well-meaning intentions of Jamie's Mum, Sandra. Her love and patience are tested as she finds out the truth about the boys' relationship.
