About the Alexander String Quartet:

Formed in New York City in 1981, the San Francisco-based Alexander String Quartet was the first American quartet to win the London International String Quartet Competition. The ASQ has served as the Ensemble in Residence of San Francisco Performances and Directors of the Morrison Chamber Music Center at San Francisco State University since 1989.

The ensemble's upcoming recording, Mozart: The Piano Quartets, Apotheosis, Vol. 2, with acclaimed pianist Joyce Yang, will be released on July 27 and has already received rave advance reviews from Fanfare Magazine.

The Alexander String Quartet has performed in the major music capitals of five continents. The ensemble has appeared at Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City; Jordan Hall in Boston; the Library of Congress and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington; and other prestigious locations across the world. The quartet's tour of Poland for the Beethoven Easter Festival was depicted in the award-winning documentary Con Moto: The Alexander String Quartet (2017), by the Documentary Film Institute at San Francisco State University.

The Alexander String Quartet has commissioned works from top composers such as Jake Heggie, Cindy Cox, Augusta Read Thomas, Robert Greenberg, Martin Bresnick, César Cano, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Wayne Peterson. In early 2019, the group will premiere a piano quintet from Samuel Carl Adams with acclaimed pianist Joyce Yang.
Long-time friends of Music at Kohl Mansion, the quartet members were Honorary Chairs of the 30th Anniversary season in 2013-14. Active on the national and international touring circuit, the quartet is always enthusiastically welcomed by Kohl audiences.
