A brand new contemporary staging of the Shakespeare's comedic tale A Midsummer Night's Dream makes its North American premiere in San Francisco at the Curran Theatre May 6 through June 1. Tickets for this multi-cultural production go on sale Sunday, March 30th.
"Incorporating sensuous choreography, contemporary scenic elements, bold music and a comedic tale of romance and magic, this production moves to a pulsating urban beat that resonates for a hip, young audience. A theatrical event unlike any other, Director Tim Supple's acclaimed South Asian production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream combines the astonishing skills of actors, dancers, martial arts experts, musicians and street acrobats from across India and Sri Lanka," press notes state. A troupe of 23 performers from a hugely diverse range of locations and backgrounds came together for a seven week rehearsal process to create a production which is performed in English, and incorporates Tamil, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and even a little Sanskrit.A Midsummer Night's Dream made its UK debut in June 2006 at the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC) Complete Works Festival at the Swan Theatre in Stratford upon Avon, England. It is directed by Tim Supple (formerly artistic director of The Young Vic, London, and regular director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and The National Theatre) with production elements by the Indian creative team of Sumant Jayakrishnan (set and costume designer), Zuleikha Chaudhari (lighting designer) and Indian resident, the Australian, Devissaro (music director).
