Marin Theatre Company Artistic Director Jasson Minadakis and Producing Director Ryan Rilette announced the sixth play of the company's expanded 45th Anniversary Season today - the West Coast premiere of A Steady Rain by Keith Huff.
Opening in February 2012, A Steady Rain is an uncompromising crime drama, told through the confessions of Denny and Joey, two Chicago beat cops. After Denny shakes down a bitter street hustler one too many times, the officers' badges, their lifelong friendship and Denny's family all come under fire in this "gritty, rich, thick, poetic and entirely gripping noir tale" (Chicago Tribune).
A Steady Rain premiered at
Chicago Dramatists in 2007 and moved to the Royal George Theatre (also in Chicago) in 2008, earning playwright
Keith Huff the 2008 Jeff Award for Best New Work. The play premiered on Broadway at the Schoenfeld Theatre in September 2009. Starring
Hugh Jackman and
Daniel Craig, the sold-out show broke the Broadway record for highest weekly gross of a non-musical production. Time Magazine named the New York run of A Steady Rain one of the "Top 10 plays of 2009."
Previously, MTC had announced to subscribers and patrons that the company would produce the Bay Area premiere of Silent Sky by San Francisco-based playwright
Lauren Gunderson in February 2012. This production has been moved to the 2012-13 Season.
In February 2011, MTC publicly announced five of the company's six programmed plays for the 2011-12 Season. These included Seven Guitars,
August Wilson's 1940s entry into his rever
Ed Pittsburgh Cycle; the world premiere of Bellwether, written by MTC's 2010 Playwright in Residence Steve Yockey and developed through MTC's New Works series; The Glass Menagerie to celebrate the centennial of
Tennessee Williams's birth; Othello, the Moor of Venice, the first play by
William Shakespeare ever produced at MTC; and God of Carnage, the Tony Award-winning, hit Broadway comedy by French playwright
Yasmina Reza and translated by
Christopher Hampton.
