Marin Theatre Company is pleased to announce that the American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) has named Equivocation by Bill Cain winner of the 2010 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award, which recognizes the best scripts premiered professionally in 2009 outside of New York City. Mr. Cain was on hand March 27 to receive a commemorative plaque and a cash prize of $25,000 at Actors Theatre of Louisville during the Humana Festival of New American Plays. The winners were selected from plays nominated by ATCA members and evaluated by a committee of 13 theatre critics.

The high-stakes political thriller Equivocation opens March 30 at MTC, and has been extended through April 25. This Bay Area premiere follows the smash hit world premiere at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and productions in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York. Variety calls Equivocation "one of the most intelligent, sizzling theatrical American plays in a decade."

Critic Misha Berson of The Seattle Times and member of the ATCA selection committee calls Equivocation, "An erudite historical drama demanding three hours of your time, and many of your brain cells, a rare property in the American theatre. And in this case, a welcome one."

MTC has awarded the 2010 Sky Cooper New American Play Prize to playwright Bill Cain for his new play 9 Circles, which will receive its world premiere at MTC in late 2010. His widely produced play Stand-Up Tragedy earned six LA Critics Awards in its premiere at the Mark Taper Forum, four Helen Hayes Awards at Arena Stage in Washington, DC, and the Joe A. Callaway Playwriting Award for its 1990 Broadway engagement. He has won many awards for his film and television work. Cain is the founder of the Boston Shakespeare Company, where he was Artistic Director for seven seasons. He is also Father Bill Cain, a Jesuit priest and teacher.
