Disney Theatrical Productions Sets Box Office Records Coast to Coast
Newsies, the Tony Award winning new American musical, and both the Broadway and North American tour productions of Disney's landmark musical event The Lion King set new house records the week ending December 30, 2012.
On Broadway, Newsies set its seventh Nederlander Theatre house record in eight months with $1,396,410 for nine performances, beating its previous record set the week ending 11/25/2012. Newsies, which recently recouped its Broadway investment faster than any other Disney Broadway show, was celebrated as 'Best of Theatre 2012' by publications nationwide, including Entertainment Weekly, Daily News and USA Today.
The Lion King set a new Minskoff Theatre house record last week with $2,666,565 for nine performances. The previous record had been set by the show during the week ending 1/1/12. 2012 was a remarkable year for the Broadway production; in the space of eight months it moved from 7th 5th longest running show in Broadway history, set a record as the highest grossing show in Broadway history and celebrated its 15th anniversary in New York.
In San Francisco, the North American tour of The Lion King set its second house record at the Orpheum Theatre with $2,100,980 for nine performances. This beats the previous house record set Thanksgiving week of this year.
During the same week, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins grossed an extraordinary $1,487,252 at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre to achieve the fourth best week of its six year run.
