California Shakespeare Theater today announced it has received a world-class sound system courtesy of Meyer Sound of Berkeley and Sound Associates of New York.

The new audio upgrade includes loudspeakers, digital audio distribution, and control interface manufactured by Meyer Sound at its Berkeley headquarters. In addition, Sound Associates is providing a Shure digital wireless system with the goal to enhance the voices of the artists and to make the productions easier to hear in the intimate Bruns Amphitheater setting. The state-of-the-art system will debut with Cal Shakes' opening production of the 2013 season, American Night: The Ballad of Juan José.

"It is a great honor to be able to support a Bay Area arts organization that works to educate and entertain all of us as well as connects our community," says Helen Meyer, executive vice president and co-founder at Meyer Sound. "I look forward to a great 2013 season and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the exceptional live theater that Cal Shakes offers."

"This extraordinary gift that Helen and John Meyer, in collaboration with the folks at Sound Associates, have provided our Theater, is all about accessibility," says Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone. "Through this top-of-the-line acoustic system, our Bruns patrons will be able to hear our actors with an unprecedented ease. Our beautiful outdoor theater can provide a challenge to the ear on windy nights, and this donation will go a long way in eradicating that issue."

Cal Shakes' 2013 season opens with the heartbreakingly hilarious history play, American Night: The Ballad of Juan José, by Richard Montoya, developed by Culture Clash and Jo Bonney, and directed by Jonathan Moscone, from May 29 through June 23. The season continues with Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, directed by Shana Cooper, from July 3 - 28; followed by Oscar Wilde's glittering comic melodrama, Lady Windermere's Fan, directed by Christopher Liam Moore, in his Bay Area directorial debut; playing August 14 through September 8. The season concludes with Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale, directed by Patricia (Spunk) McGregor, with choreography byPaloma McGregor from September 25 through October 20. All performances take place at the Bruns Amphitheater in Orinda; more information about the productions is available online at calshakes.org.
