Brava Opens Its Cabaret With The SF Premiere Of Marga Gomez' LATIN STANDARDS

In her 12th and final solo play Latin Standards Marga Gomez performs the loving, funny and true story of perseverance and creative addiction passed down from immigrant father to lesbian daughter.

Mixing nostalgia, urgency, and comic edge, Gomez portrays herself as a driven adult child of a Cuban entertainer. Defying reason she attempts to produce a hipster comedy night at a struggling Latino drag queen club, Esta Noche, during the onset of San Francisco's gentrification crisis. Between vivid portrayals of characters from 1960's Manhattan to present day San Francisco, Gomez ponders the ballads (or Latin Standards) penned by her late father Willy Chevalier: a comedian/producer/entrepreneur and composer of dance tunes that reveled in jealousy and obsession.Brava is excited to bring Marga Gomez' Latin Standards to San Francisco for its hometown premiere in our brand-new Cabaret! We'll kick off the 12 performance run of Latin Standards with a special opening night performance on Saturday, January 13 that features a post-performance party with Marga and friends.

Michael Musto interviewed Marga for the national publication Logo. "Hi, Marga. Tell me about Latin Standards," Musto asks, opening the interview."It premiered at the Public's Under the Radar festival last January. I've written 12 solo plays and this is the last one I'm writing and performing-not that I won't still perform. Latin Standards is about my dad and me. I've written about him before, but this angle is how my dad wrote songs besides being a comedian. He wrote a few Latin Billboard hits. His song was bought by the Muzak corporation and he was very proud of that. It played in elevators for a while." Continue reading the full interview here.
