Jo Schuman Silver, producer of Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon, announced last night the three Bay Area high school winners of The Steve Silver Foundation & Beach Blanket Babylon "Scholarship for the Arts." The event featured a Glee-inspired opening performance of "Don't Stop Believin'" by the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon.
Out of nine finalists who performed in the live competition at Club Fugazi, Alexandria "Lexi" Viernes (Dance) from Half Moon Bay High School in Half Moon Bay performing to "I Dreamed a Dream," Marcus Thompson (Acting) from Oakland Technical High School in Oakland performing a monologue from Naomi Iizuka's Hamlet: Blood in the Brain and Rachel Davoren (Voice) from San Marin High School in Novato performing "When I Look at Your" from The Scarlet Pimpernel each walked away with $10,000 towards their college education.
The celebrity panel of judges included KGO Radio's Jerry Friedman, Smuin Ballet's Artistic & Executive Director Celia Fushille, Composer Gordon Getty, KMEL's Chuy Gomez, Composer Jake Heggie, California Shakespeare Theater's Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone, American Conservatory Theater's Artistic Director Carey Perloff, ABC7's Don Sanchez, Berkeley Repertory Theatre's Artistic Director Tony Taccone and KRON4/KCBS Radio's Jan Wahl. Star 101.3's Don Bleu served as Master of Ceremonies.
