Ann Hampton Callaway and Judy Butterfield Come To The Bay Area Cabaret 5/17

By:

A San Francisco native who has taken New York by storm, an established New York Diva, two irresistible cabaret concerts, one unforgettable day and one beautiful venue. Such is the recipe that Bay Area Cabaret has created for the send-off of its most successful season to date. Bay Area Cabaret concludes its 5th season on Sunday, May 17 at 2pm with Judy Butterfield followed by a 5pm performance by Ann Hampton Callaway; both shows are at the Marines Memorial Club Commandants Room (609 Sutter Street@ Mason). Individual tickets to these shows are available at www.bayareacabaret.org or City Box Office (415) 392-4400. Tickets to Ms. Callaway’s show are $45 general admission/$40 for subscribers. Judy Butterfield tickets are $35 general admission/$20 for subscribers and Callaway ticketholders.

“Bay Area Cabaret is delighted to have two distinctly different artists to close out our 2008-'09 season,” said Marilyn Levinson, Bay Area Cabaret founder and Executive Producer. “Judy Butterfield is a rising star who has received more cabaret accolades and who possesses a more striking stage presence than any 19-year-old I've ever met or seen on the stage. She draws an audience ranging from teenagers new to cabaret to more seasoned fans, who have followed her meteoric rise. Ann Hampton Callaway, the season’s grand finale, is one of New York's best-known cabaret artists who constantly redefines the art form - and herself - with her staggering versatility and range. This show marks her third BAC appearance in five seasons. Our audience simply adores her.”

As a champion of the great American Songbook, Ann Hampton Callaway has made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. Ms. Callaway is best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical Swing! and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series The Nanny. Callaway is a Platinum Award winning writer whose songs are featured on five of Barbra Streisand's recent CD's. Ms. Callaway has been a special guest performer with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood and is featured at many of the Carnegie Hall tributes. She has sung with more than twenty-five of the world's top orchestras and big bands, and has performed for President Clinton in Washington, D.C. and at President Gorbachev's Youth Peace Summit in Moscow. Visit www.bayareacabaret.org and www.annhamptoncallaway.com for an array of clips of Ms. Callaway performing with the legendary Liza Minelli and others.

San Francisco native 19-year-old Judy Butterfield (Urban ’08, daughter of former ACT actor Richard Butterfield) makes her Bay Area Cabaret debut with this performance. Ms. Butterfield, winner of this year’s Mabel Mercer Foundation Julie Wilson Award, has enjoyed an impressive year in New York that has been highlighted by performances at Manhattan’s famed Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel and Jazz at Lincoln Center, all while attending Barnard College at Columbia University as a freshman. “Blame It On My Youth” captures the evolution of this rising cabaret star through storytelling and songs of new love by composers ranging from Jerome Kern and Cole Porter to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Ms. Butterfield’s director is cabaret veteran Clifford Bell. Her musical director is popular Bay Area pianist Ken Muir.
