Write Out Loud - an organization founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading short stories aloud for a live audience - announces TWAIN'S AMERICA, the first production in their American Season XI, a season that focuses on American stories by American authors. Write Out Loud Story Concerts bring literature to life - aloud - with rehearsed readings by professional actors. Each program explores specific themes by weaving a variety of stories, poems, and sometimes music, together into a literary tapestry. Mark Christopher Lawrence (of TV's Chuck fame), Tim West, Cynthia Gerber and Walter Ritter will perform. A pre-show reception starts at 6:15pm with a 7:00pm curtain.

Write Out Loud Artistic Director, Veronica Murphy shared, "We are fresh off the heels of our 8th annual TWAINFEST, our all day event celebrating the literature of Twain and his contemporaries - and we received such an incredible outpouring of interest from the community. Our American Season will be filled with literature by and about the diverse people who make up our great nation. What better way to begin than with with Mark Twain. According to Hemingway "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn."

TWAIN'S AMERICA - Selection of Readings

  • Tim West to read selections from Mark Twain, including a letter he penned to Helen Keller regarding an act of plagiarism, of which she was accused.
  • Cynthia Gerber to perform as the iconic 19th Century American poet, Emily Dickinson, in an excerpt from The Belle of Amherst by William Luce.
  • Mark Christopher Lawrence to read Jealous by Paul Laurence Dunbar and other Dunbar selections.
  • Walter Ritter to read An Unlikely Hero, an adaptation from the memoir of Ulysses S. Grant by Lawrence DuKore, including a conversation he had with Mark Twain.

Tickets for Twain's America are $25. There are discounts for seniors, students and military. Purchase tickets for the Monday, September 11th performance, or buy the entire season, at www.writeoutloudsd.com or by calling 619-297-8953.

In addition to their six show season of Story Concerts, Write Out Loud provides the community six other core programs serving over 18,000 people annually. Additional programs include TwainFest - a free family celebration in August in Old Town, Stories for Seniors, StoryBox Theatre for elementary students, Read Imagine Create for teens. Poetry Out Loud and, new this year, Ripples From Walden Pond for high school students.
