The Old Globe Announces August Events

The Old Globe Theatre has announced their August event schedule:

June 12 - September 23, 2010 ? Lowell Davies Festival Theatre
KING LEAR

One of the greatest and most powerful dramas in western literature, King Lear is the ultimate family drama told against a background of intense political intrigue. Lear, an aging monarch, has decided to divide his kingdom between his three daughters - each to receive land and wealth in proportion to their declaration of love for him. Two of them compete to flatter their father, while the one loving daughter, Cordelia, refuses to play the game and is exiled. Seduced by his daughters' flattery, Lear sets in motion a catastrophic series of events that will destroy his kingdom, his family and ultimately his sanity.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is the quintessential battle-of-the-sexes comedy. Baptista has two daughters that need to be married off - Bianca; docile, beautiful and much sought after by the noble men of the town, and Katherine; ill-tempered and shrewish, with an acid tongue that no man can tame. As the oldest, Katherine must marry first - not that she much cares. Bianca's many suitors can't afford to wait, so in a wild scheme to find a husband for Katherine, they convince the wily Petruchio to take on the challenge of domesticating the willful "shrew." Can Petruchio subdue Katherine's temper and win her bountiful dowry, or will she continue her shrewish ways?

Take the writer of Broadway's murderously giddy musical Curtains, add the director who intoxicated us with Drowsy Chaperone and taught Monty Python how to dance in Spamalot, and top it off with a sexy, soaring score of classic Cahn and Van Heusen songs like "My Kind of Town (Chicago is)," "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," and "Call Me Irresponsible," and you get Robin and the 7 Hoods, a new musical that takes the Robin Hood legend and gives it an early sixties spin. When Nicky Robino, a suave, fast-rising entrepreneur in Chicago's sophisticated nightclub scene, finds himself wanted by both sides of the law, he enlists allies from his old gang back in the Sherwood Park neighborhood of Chicago's south side, and he and his merry band quickly learn that a few wrongs could make things right.

TWELFTH NIGHT & AS YOU LIKE IT
SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Old Globe's Summer Shakespeare Intensive brings together 40 high school students for four weeks of rehearsals and workshops to build their skills in classical acting and stagecraft. The program culminates with a performance of two bilingual (English/Spanish) productions of Shakespeare's plays. This year the students will perform 50-minute versions of both Twelfth Night and As You Like It in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theater to celebrate the Globe's 75th Anniversary.
Tickets: $12 adults and $9 children.
