Ryan Scott Oliver's TOMORROW, THE ISLAND DIES World Premiere to Open SDSU
The musical is performed by SDSU’s MFA Musical Theatre graduate students alongside undergraduate performers.
A new musical arrives in San Diego as SDSU’s New Musical Initiative presents the world premiere of “Tomorrow, The Island Dies,” by composer and writer Ryan Scott Oliver.
Set on a storm-ravaged island facing imminent disappearance, “Tomorrow, The Island Dies” follows a group of young people grappling with fear, loss, and the consequences of a changing world. When tragedy strikes, tensions rise, and trust begins to unravel in this haunting, thought-provoking new musical.
Taking place in a near-future world shaped by climate crisis and social fracture, the story centers on Widow Clack, an isolated young woman living on a doomed island off the coast of Maine. As the community prepares for evacuation, a mysterious death ignites suspicion and paranoia among the remaining inhabitants, leading to dangerous accusations and devastating consequences.
The musical draws inspiration from psychological horror and literary influences, blending an eerie sense of inevitability with deeply human storytelling.
“I’m interested in the ways people respond to crisis—how they seek order, how they define virtue, and how quickly certainty can become destabilizing,” said writer Ryan Scott Oliver. “The piece asks what happens when our desire for clarity overtakes our capacity for compassion.”
Developed over the past two years through SDSU’s New Musical Initiative, the work was selected from hundreds of submissions.
Musically, “Tomorrow, The Island Dies” draws on influences ranging from “Sweeney Todd” to Benjamin Britten’s “Peter Grimes,” creating a soundscape that is both hauntingly beautiful and deeply unsettling. Oliver describes the score as something that “beckons and disturbs,” mirroring the emotional and psychological tension at the heart of the story.
The production continues SDSU’s commitment to developing innovative new works that engage with urgent contemporary issues. Supported by the Julia R. Brown New Musical Theatre Fund, the New Musical Initiative has previously developed works by leading artists in the field, offering students the opportunity to collaborate directly with professional creators.
Performed by SDSU’s MFA Musical Theatre graduate students alongside undergraduate performers, the production showcases a new generation of artists tackling complex, challenging material.
Performances of Tomorrow, The Island Dies will take place at the Main Stage Theatre at San Diego State University from May 1-6. Tickets range from $17.00 – $20.00 and can be purchased through the SDSU Theatre, Television, and Film website.
