Sierra Stages and Miners Foundry Cultural Center are pleased to present "STONE SOUP"- the first in a series of play readings entitled "Theater by the Book" - on Wednesday April 24 at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City at 7:30 PM. Admission is FREE, with a suggested donation of $10 to cover costs. There are no advance tickets, and the doors open at 7 PM. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

"STONE SOUP" is a delightful children's musical, written by Ken Hardin and Michaela Conger. It is based on an old folk story in which a stranger comes to town and teaches the townspeople the benefit of working together to achieve a common goal.

Ken Hardin, Artistic Director of InConcert Sierra, wrote the musical score for "STONE SOUP" in the early 1980's when he was a student at Cal State Northridge. At that time, the musical toured extensively to elementary schools throughout southern California. This reading is a Nevada County premiere and the first time the musical has been performed in close to 30 years. It is about an hour long and is perfect for families and children of all ages.

The cast of "STONE SOUP" includes Keith Porter, Toon Vandevorst, Kim Wellman, Susan Mason, Jeffrey Mason, Nancy Haffey, Emily Rice, Jozi Gullickson, Valarie Bush, John Bush and Ken Getz. Ken Hardin plays the piano, accompanied by Steve Nicholson on bass.

All of the readings in the "Theater by the Book" series are informal. Cast members will read from the script, and there will be no set or costumes and minimal staging only. It is a unique opportunity to experience a wide range of plays (musicals, mysteries, comedies, and dramas) in an informal and relaxed setting, and to support local theatre.

Following "STONE SOUP", the "Theater by the Book" series will continue with the murder mystery "SLEUTH" by Anthony Shaffer on Wednesday May 22 and the comedy "LETTICE & LOVAGE" by Peter Shaffer on Wednesday June 19.
