Sierra Stages Closes A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING 11/13

Sierra Stages completes its second season of musicals and plays with the Tony Award-nominated revue celebrating the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein: "A Grand Night for Singing". The revue will play for four weekends only, October 21 through November 13, at the Off Center Stage in downtown Grass Valley, and features the talents of five of Nevada County's finest musical theatre performers: Terry Brown, Rebekah Martino, Robert Meyer, Kim Wellman and Carolyn Winters. The performers will be accompanied by an eight-person band, led by musical director, Ken Getz. The production is directed by Nancy Haffey and Peter Mason, with choreography by Grace Fae.

A fresh take on the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein, "A Grand Night for Singing" is an intimate revue which explores the various stages of love and relationships using innovative musical arrangements of songs from every one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Broadway musicals, including such classics as Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music, as well as the lesser known Allegro, Pipe Dream, Me & Juliet, the movie State Fair and television musical Cinderella. "A Grand Night for Singing" was conceived by Walter Bobbie (who received a Tony Award for direction of the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago), and received enthusiastic notices when it opened on Broadway on the 50th anniversary of Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical partnership. The Broadway production earned two Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

Anyone who has ever experienced a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical on stage or film will thoroughly enjoy "A Grand Night for Singing." Among the thirty-five songs are many classics of the American musical theatre, including "Shall We Dance?", "Oh What a Beautiful Morning", "We Kiss in a Shadow", "Hello Young Lovers," and "Some Enchanted Evening". Each song has been re-imagined with new, exciting musical arrangements - "Shall We Dance" is now a comicpas de deux; "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" has an arrangement worthy of the Andrews Sisters; a jazzy "Kansas City" leaves no question about how terrifically up to date the remarkable songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein remain to this day.

Sierra Stages is completing its second season of musicals and plays. Its production of "Into the Woods" at The Center for the Arts this spring moved audiences, and was nominated for three Elly Awards (Lighting Design, Set Design and Musical Direction), with lighting designer, Erin Brighting, winning an Elly Award. This summer, the largely young adult cast of "Babes in Arms" wowed audiences with a classic Rodgers & Hart score at the Nevada Theatre. And the sounds of laughter are still echoing in the rafters and aisles of the Off Center Stage from the recently-closed comedy "Lend Me A Tenor".

"A Grand Night for Singing" plays from October 21 through November 13 at the Off Center Stage, 315 Richardson Street, downtown Grass Valley (behind The Center for the Arts). Performances are Thursday at 7:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door for Thursday; and $20 in advance, $25 at the door for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
