Character Descriptions (all roles open)

MAMA ROSE (Alto with belt)
The ultimate stage mother. Lives her life vicariously through her two daughters, whom she's put into show business. She is loud, brash, pushy and single-minded, but at times can be doting and charming. She is holding down demons of her own that she is afraid to face. Her voice is the ultimate Broadway belt - it should be powerful, not pretty.

BABY JUNE (child belt)
Baby June is a Shirley Temple-like up-and-coming Vaudeville star, and MAdam Rose's youngest daughter. Her onstage demeanor is sugary-sweet, cute, precocious and adorable to the nth degree. Must be able to sing with confidence and volume, and have some decent dancing skills. The ability to do the splits and twirl a baton a big plus.

BABY LOUISE
should look a couple years older than Baby June. She is MAdam Rose's brow-beaten oldest daughter, and has always played second fiddle to her baby sister. She is shy, and subdued; she doesn't have the confidence of her sister.

HERBIE (Baritone)
He is Rose's agent and suitor. He is amiable, kind and gentle, and consequently has trouble competing with Rose's gusto.

JUNE (strong Alto)
Baby June as a young teenager. The older she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother's trained monkey. Must be able to belt a song and have decent dancing skills. The ability to do the splits and twirl a baton a big plus.

LOUISE/Gypsy Rose Lee (Mezzo)
Baby Louise as a teenager, who grows up to be Gypsy Rose Lee. Still pushed aside by MAdam Rose in favor of June, until she herself becomes her mother's new pet project. Should be able to move well. Actress must be over 18 to play this role.

TULSA (Bari-Tenor)
Boy-next-door type. Must be an excellent dancer. Strives to break out of the troupe with an act of his own. Sings and dances "All I Need Is the Girl."

TESSIE TURA, MAZEPPA, ELECTRA
Past-their-prime burlesque dancers. Comic relief. Ages are flexible, but should look older than the burlesque ideal. The three sing "You Gotta Get a Gimmick."

TESSIE (Mezzo belt)
A burlesque dancer that shares her dressing room with Louise. Formerly a ballerina, and still has some of the moves. A course broad who's been around the block. Very funny.

MAZEPPA (Alto belt)
A burlesque dancer who's tough and physically intimidating. Ability to play the trumpet a big plus.

ELECTRA (Mezzo belt)
A burlesque dancer who's quieter than her counterparts. Has her costume wired with lights, allowing her to "shine" without working up a sweat. Ditzy and sweet.

MISS CRATCHITT
Secretary to the unseen Vaudeville mogul T.T. Granziger. May be played by one of the burlesque dancers, or by a member of the women's ensemble.

CHILDREN'S ENSEMBLE
Two or three young boys and oNe Young girl, approx. 7 to 11 years old. Sing and dance with Baby June and Baby Louise. Ability of one child to play accordion or clarinet a plus.

YOUNG WOMEN'S ENSEMBLE
Six young women sing and dance backup to Louise as "MAdam Rose's Toreadorables." A couple of these have minor expanded roles. Also play children's mothers in Act I, and some double as backup dancers in Act II.

YOUNG MEN'S ENSEMBLE
Six young men sing and dance backup for teenage June, plus join in the number "Have an Eggroll, Mr. Goldstone." Should be strong singers and dancers. Will double as small parts in Act I and Act II, plus some backup dancing in Gypsy's strip routine.

TWO OLDER MEN
Non-singing character actors who play numerous roles throughout.

Plot Synopsis
(GYPSY is the ultimate story about an aggressive stage mother. Join Rose, June and Louise in their trip across the United States during the 1920's, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Jule Styne's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics include Let Me Entertain You, Some People, You'll Never Get Away from Me, If Momma Was Married, All I Need Is the Girl, Everything's Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Get A Gimmick and Together Wherever We Go. This is a gripping story of one of the most frightening aspects of show business.)

The story starts in Seattle with stage mother, Rose, pushing her two daughters into Uncle Jocko's Kiddie Show. June, her mother feels, is the most likely to become a star. Louise is plainer and quieter; she stands meekly in her sister's shadow. A new act called 'Baby June and her Newsboys' is conceived by Rose, and the family is off to the 'big time' in Los Angeles. The act steeped in star spangled banners, dancing horses (Louise plays the rear end), and screaming newsboys moves to Dallas, Akron, New York, Buffalo and Omaha. Along the way Rose meets Herbie, a theatrical agent, and hires him as manager. He makes himself father to the troupe, sharing with them their meals of chow mein, Rose's favorite food. Rose scrimps as she schemes and scrambles for bookings and billings to maintain their hand to mouth existence. She sleeps her charges six in a dingy hotel room and makes their costumes from hotel blankets. Her object is to make her two penniless girls into world stars. The girls begin to grow up and the act becomes 'Dainty June and her Newsboys.' Unfortunately its quality does not improve. Bookings are cancelled and the act moves on.

Louise wishes that Momma would marry a plain man so they could settle down. Herbie proposes but is rejected. June elopes with Tulsa, one of the boys in the act. Rose sets out to make Louise into the star. She bursts into new enthusiasm with the rousing number Everything's Coming Up Roses. Behind Rose lies a worrying sense of doom; a feeling that she never will fulfill her dream of stardom for her girls because it is really a dream of stardom for herself.

Finally the troupe reaches the bottom, a burlesque house in Wichita. Rose laments that she would rather starve than perform there. Louise realizes there is no vaudeville left except for burlesque. Here the clumsy Louise shoots into stardom by becoming something different: a ladylike stripper. Three strippers dressed respectively in a ballet costume, a trumpet and well placed electric light bulbs are used in a most exaggerated, but very funny number, You Gotta Get a Gimmick, to indicate the difference between the usual brassy stripper and the very elegant Louise. At last Louise breaks away from her mother and goes out on her own as Gypsy Rose Lee.

Rose bursts into the plaintive Rose's Turn in which she sings of her suppressed talents that she has sacrificed to further the careers of her unappreciative daughters.

Synopsis:
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As aapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and aults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
