Nicholas Hytner, director of The National Theatre of Great Britain, looked at the upcoming season and realized it was rather depressing. Determined to add some laughs to the season, he reached out to friend and renowned playwright, Richard Bean for an adaptation of Goldoni's classic commedia dell'arte play, A Servant of Two Masters. Bean submitted One Man, Two Guvnor s.

The plot is as such: Francis Henshall, an out - of - work skiffle player, finds himself working for two men at the same time, Roscoe Crabbe, a London gangster, and Stanley Stubbers, an upper - class numbskull with a lot of confidence. Determined t o keep his double employment a secret, find something to eat, and win the heart of Dolly, a bookkeeper for another notorious gangster in town, Frances finds himself in over his head and armed with only his wit and the assistance of his friend Paddy.

The play opened at the National Theatre in 2011, followed by a tour of England, and in November of 2011 on the West End to rave reviews. A subsequent Broadway engagement was booked. The play was nominated for four Outer Critic Circle Awards and seven Tony Awards. James Corden would win the Tony for Best Actor in a Play, beating out legends like Frank Langella, John Lithgow, James Earl Jones, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Dave Pierini first read On e Man, Two Guvnors about three years ago. While he loved the play, and thought the comedy would be a perfect fit for B Street, it was just too big for the current theatre." We just didn't have the room to produce something that big, " Pierini said. When the theatre broke ground for the Sofia, talks surrounding the first play began. Buck Busfield, artistic director and founder, wanted to open with something big and funny. " I wanted to start with a splash, something that would give us instant momentum, " Busfield said.

The staff quickly agreed that One Man, Two Guvnors was the perfect play to open the new complex. " It's right up our alley, " Pierini commented. " A great comedy with tons of fun, rich characters and a lot of physical gags that our company has come to perfect. "

The play will be a full cast of B Street Acting Company members, continuing the theatre's commitment in finding and acquiring the best actors in the country. The Playwrigh t: Richard Bean: In 2011 Richard became the first playwright to win the Evening Standard Award for Best Play for two plays, The Hereti c and One Man, Two Guvnor s.

The New York production of One Man, Two Guvnor s was awarded the 2012 Outer Critics ' Circle Award for Outstandin g New Broadway Play. His recent credits include Kiss Me ( Hampstead ), The Nap ( Sheffield Crucible ), Great Britain ( National Theatre ), Made in Dagenham: The Musical ( Adelphi Theatre ) and Pitcairn ( Chichester Minerva Theatre / Shakespeare's Globe ).
