The Kingston Trio began with Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and Dave Guard in 1955, becoming one of the most influential bands in the 50s - they joined Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker, The Beatles and others in winning the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to the band in 2010.

At founding member Bob Shane's behest, Nick's son Josh Reynolds, Mike Marvin, and Tim Gorelangton formed the "Keeping It In The Family" tour: no mere tribute band, it's more a true continuation of a beloved musical heritage, down to the striped shirts and blue jeans.

The Harris Center is proud to welcome The Kingston Trio "Keeping It In The Family" tour to Stage One. It's a national tour that marks the group's 60th anniversary. The performances take the audience on an iconic musical journey to a time when folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture - and the top of the music charts.

Just how big was The Kingston Trio? It's no exaggeration to say they redefined the landscape of popular music in America and eventually the world. They created a demand for folk where none had existed before. Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard literally morphed into a cultural phenomenon. They pioneered the "College Concert" which is now a part of American life.

With their signature-striped shirts, banjos, bongos, guitars and charismatic personalities, they became the most outstanding singing and recording act of their time. Consider that they set one debut album sales record that remained unbeaten for five decades until a woman named Beyonce came along. That's how popular the Kingston Trio was.

A Trio concert was one of the all-time great live show experiences; the "Keeping It In The Family Tour" is a chance to experience a hand-clapping, sing-along, modern day version of the Kingston Trio sensation in person.

"It was Nick Reynolds' and my fondest hope that Josh and Mike would carry on the Trio family legacy...rounding it out is Tim, one of the only musicians to record with Nick outside the Trio," noted Bob Shane. According to an interview in 2017, Josh purchased the rights to the group from Bob Shane, who thought it was important to keep the trio in the family. Josh takes that responsibility to heart. "We use just one microphone, we wear the striped suits, the whole bit," he said. "We want people just to come and enjoy the show." (Curry Coastal Pilot).

Nick Reynolds, along with lifelong musical partners Mike Marvin and Tim Gorelangton have an intrinsic link to and experience with the original Kingston Trio: Josh and his adopted brother Mike were both raised by Nick Reynolds, and Tim, a close friend since boyhood, is one of the few musicians outside the trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds. Many of their earliest memories recall the iconic trio's performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture - and the top of the music charts.

In a 2017 interview, Josh recalled when he realized his father was a star. His mother and actress Joan Reynolds took him to the Sahara Tahoe Casino. It "was just this huge auditorium packed with all these people. I was hanging out near the orchestra pit, and then this booming-voiced announcer addressed the crowd: 'Welcome to the Kingston Trio!' I looked up at mom and said, 'are they all here to see my daddy?'"

These three "Sons of Nick" went on to pursue different successful careers - Josh as a commercial producer, Mike as a Hollywood writer and director, and Tim as a musician - but always remained close, playing and singing the Trio collection whenever they could. The unspoken hope was to someday re-unite and carry the Kingston Trio legacy to a new level.

That time has come. Along with all their traditional hit songs and fan favorites (everything from "Tom Dooley" to "MTA" to "Greenback Dollar" and "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?"), Josh, Mike and Tim have added fresh new stories and songs to The Kingston Trio repertoire.

Cited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Eagles to comedian and banjo player Steve Martin to contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers, The Kingston Trio occupies a unique, preeminent position in American musical history.

Tickets are available online at www.HarrisCenter.net or from the Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from noon to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time.
