B Street Theatre Presents California Premiere of D'Amour's DETROIT, Now thru 11/17
The B Street Theatre presents the California premiere of Lisa D'Amour's Obie Awarding-winning comedy Detroit on the Mainstage. The Obie Awards, Off-Broadway's highest honor, have been presented by New York's Village Voice since 1955 to spotlight the more adventurous Off-Broadway movement's achievements. The play's wildly popular production at Playwrights Horizons earned it the coveted 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play along with Julia Jarcho's Grimly Handsome. Now, Sacramento audiences have the limited opportunity to see the California premiere of Off-Broadway's best new comedy at B Street this fall.
Detroit tells the story of Mary and Ben, whose simple efforts to reach out to Kenny and Sharon spiral outrageously out of control. With their own quiet lives suddenly in a tailspin, the young couple eagerly befriends their new neighbors hoping for a little fun and distraction. What they get, however, is more questions than answers and more excitement than could ever be imagined in D'Amour's deliriously funny new comedy. Lisa D'Amour is quickly making a name for herself and her unique brand of spirited, insightful writing across the nation. She is both playwright and performer, and her devised work has earned her several accolades including a 2003 Obie Award Special Citation for Nita and Zita. Detroit originally premiered at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in 2010 before moving Off-Broadway in 2012.
The show runs from October 6 to November 17: Tuesdays at 6:30pm; Wednesdays at 2 pm and 6:30 pm; Thursdays and Fridays at 8 pm; Saturdays at 5 pm and 9 pm; Sundays at 2 pm.
