Admiral Michael Mullen Up Next in 'Sacramento Speaks' Series, 1/7

By:

Michael Mullen, retired United States Navy admiral and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Presidents Bush and Obama, will speak at Sacramento Community Center Theater on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, 8 pm. Admiral Mullen, whose lecture is sponsored by Safe Credit Union, is the third of six distinguished speakers in the 2013-14 season. Series tickets may be purchased at www.sacramentospeakers.com.

As the highest-ranking officer in the US Armed Forces, Admiral Mullen led the military during a critical period of transition, overseeing both the troop surge and the winding down of the combat mission in Iraq. He was considered particularly active and vocal in his role as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, advocating for the rapid development and fielding of innovative technologies and new methods for combating terrorism, and emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and economics in U.S. security. His Senate testimony on "don't ask, don't tell" played an important role in ending the policy. His best moment as Chairman came in 2011, when Mullen oversaw the assassination of Osama bin Laden by a topnotch team of Navy Seals.

Retired after 43 years of active service, Mullen says the world "still is very, very dangerous," and that cyber attacks, our national debt, and the state of the economy, domestic and worldwide, are all threats to our national security.

After Admiral Mullen, the Series continues with physician and author Dr. Andrew Weil (1/21/14), crisis management expert Judy Smith (2/18/14) and host of the Food Network's Barefoot Contessa program, Ina Garten (4/1/14). The season began with Steve Wozniak (10/1/13) and Vice President Al Gore (11/12/13).

The Sacramento Speakers Series is a community lecture series that provides an open forum for a free discussion of timely and important issues by nationally acclaimed speakers. Now in its ninth season, the Series brings variety of political leaders, authors, scientists, and visionaries to Sacramento. Managing principal and attorney Mitchell Ostwald describes the Series as "an extraordinary community experience that gives our patrons an opportunity to hear about and question renowned and influential people from a wide variety of backgrounds on an even wider variety of topics."
